FWIW....I have never gone completely natural in my diet but I have for most of my time chosen to be med free rather than deal with the side affects of the powerful drugs.
I got almost complete relief when I used Tysabri and once off it I went into a tailspin of active crohns....but I do have these observations and experiences:
Whenever I have been in a third world country (central or south america, africa) I have been in my best health. The changes are remarkable and quick to appear. The further off the beaten track I go and the longer I stay there the longer the remission is once I get back to the states and all its processed foods. After three weeks in Africa with no big D, no cramps, no blood, I remained symptom free once back here in Florida for two full weeks. Usually my trips south have me in perfect health within a few days and it lasts for almost a week once I get back.
Over a year ago I started on Humira and after a year the affect was minimal...I was about to quit taking it when I suffered a major blockage...had 30 inches of small bowel removed and now the Humira seems to be working....not full remission but better.....not even as good as I get when out of the country.
I have tried to remain true to only organically grown foods here...but my will power sucks and I fail. My wife and I have also considered moving to Costa Rica for good but the current housing market has locked in here. Finally ...my wife....who is a very stubborn person has converted one our spare bedrooms, half of our lanai and part of our back yard into a natural vegetable and herb garden...no pesticides or insecticides....she is replacing all of our regular flours with non-wheat flours...our processed sugar with natural rice and agave syrups.....almost all canned foods have been donated to the local food bank and all sodas have been pretty much banned.
I have gained about 10 pounds.....I have dropped my bathroom trips from 20 or 25 daily to about 8 or 9. I have more energy now and my friends say I have never looked better.
I really feel the more natural you can go the better and the younger the person is the better the long term effects should be.
