Anyone here with crohn's at terminal ileum that caused ulcer?

Hello,

I was hospitalized two weeks ago for the second time this year for crohns sx. They did a colonoscopy and found that the crohns has caused an ulcer now in my TI.  I have microscopic crohns in my large intestines and scar tissue.  For this, the MD increased my Pred from 30 to 40mg because my regular GI was out of town and he didn't want to start Humira until she came back.  I go back to see her this Monday.  Have any of you ever had crohns cause an ulcer in your TI? The Pred is just not working.  I have been on pred since Jan 14th. Pred gives me back my appetite but when I do eat it hurts my stomach, causes nausea, and severe diarrhea.  I have lost weight since my hospitalization.  I am afraid the ulcer will eat through and cause a fistula or worse.  The MD also said he had a hard time getting the scope through the area so I take it to mean, inflammation is high.  I have been on humira in past but was d/c'd due to shingles and have failed cimzia and remicade.  Never have had surgery.  I am even out of work now due to the pain and weakness.  This is such a horrible disease.  I have had this flare since July and it keeps getting worse. I started at 176lbs. and now weigh 1411bs. but the doctors don't seem to be concerned about my weight loss because I am still not below weight.

Hi I know at times it is very hard to get past some of the hard times that the disease seems to put us threw. I see you have had fistula problems and rectal... How are your other area's doing? Has your Dr. mentioned surgery to remove the TI ? To tell you the truth I don't know if there was ulcer or not before my operation ,they just said that the crohn's had made a mess in there.. .. I do know though I had fistula and alot of weight lost and just wasn't getting any better..lol gail

I have crohn's in my small intestine. I was on prednisone for about a year and the last scope I had done they found 2 ulcers in that area. I am going to gastro today and I am going to try Cimzia if they approve me for their finincial aide program. I'm scared to move to that level of drug but nothing else has worked for me. I've had crohn's for about 10 years now. Hope you get feeling better soon.

I had a bad ulcer in my TI too. It ate all the way to an artery and bled something terrible. It's how I was diagnosed in the hospital as well.

Hi there,

I had two ulcers in my TI at the time of my colonoscopy, which was a little over a year ago.  Even with those, and having inflammation in my cecum and ascending colon, my first GI refused to diagnose me.  Anyhow, I have a great GI now who did diagnose me.

I wasn't on anything at the time they found the ulcers.  I do know that my Crohn's symptoms kept getting worse and worse, even with being on prednisone, imuran and pentasa.  I got started on Remicade back in November and that has honestly helped me feel a lot better.  I am sorry to hear it didn't work for you!

This is an awful disease and I hope you are able to find something that will help you soon!  Please take care and keep us informed!

Thank you all for your responses. What were your symptoms with the ulcer? Today I feel hungry and eat but again when I eat the pain is back and major diarrhea. I am wondering if the hungry feeling is because my food is not absorbing there, It is almost like I am famished and I just want anything to eat. But before, I didn't have an appetite. I just don't understand--I feel hungry, so I eat then I hurt, take hydrocodone, have diarrhea, plus get nauseated. It keeps coming in cycles all week. Can it be just the pred reacting all the sudden like this?

The TI is where a lot of fats and also B-12 are absorbed. Chronic inflammation there can result in malabsorption, which could explain a lot of your weight loss and the frequent D. I am wondering if entocort, which is a more localized topical steroid designed to address small bowel inflammation, would be more effective than pred. Especially since you have fistulizing disease, it's important to try to get those ulcers healed or you will be facing a higher likelihood of surgery.

My symptoms were that of crohn's. Diarrhea, pain/cramping up, and when it got really bad I started to bleed heavily. It's never effected my upper stomach (hunger or anything like that). But some people have Crohn's through out their digestive system.
