Meds after surgery?

I was curious what meds did they put any of you on after surgery?  I was told that I would go back on Imuran and that is it.  Due to me getting histoplasmosis after taking Humira in Aug 2008 they took me off of all of my immue supp. drugs and are very reluctant to put me back on any of them due to the risk of the Histoplasmosis coming back.

I was on Asacol before my resections and after. I recommend everyone stay on some kind of maintainence meds always to keep the inflammation in check. Good luck!

I was on Humira before my resection and my GI wanted me to go back on it after surgery but my surgeon recommended Pentasa (my GI doesn't think Pentasa is effective). I wanted to have some time off of the heavy hitters and chose to go back on Pentasa. I'll have a small bowel follow through around a year post-op and depending on what that shows, I'll either stay on Pentasa or go back on Imuran or Humira. No one really seems to know what is the most effective drug to keep you in remission post-op. Good luck with your surgery. SB

I too wonder what is the best post-op drug. I've been on Asacol since 2001 and I needed surgery,is Asacol working for me? I don't know.
What is Imuran used for?

Hey Wolfie just fyi after my first resection my GI told me I could quit using the Asacol, so I did. Wound up getting sick again and went back on it and have been fine since. If I were you, I would stay on the Asacol. Imuran is an immune suppressant and helps to keep the inflammation down.

Hi, I was taking Pentasa, Imuran and Entocort before resection, stayed on Pentasa (raised from 2x2 to 4x2)afer that, stopped the rest. On colonoscopy 3 months later docs saw the desease coming back and put me back on Entocort. I have been on it since (almost 2 years) and am quitting it now to be able to breastfeed. Really hope my illness will stay quiet...Am worried it won´t last but would love to try and nurse cry

My son recently had resection surgery.  He came home on Flagyl, started Pentasa two weeks later and started Imuran at his 8 week check up.  He'll be on the flagyl for 3 months.  I've reserached it and there doesn't seem to be tons of studies on preventing post-op recurrence, but the 3 month flagyl and Imuran combo does seem to be the best that they know today.  The imuran gives you about a 20% better chance of maintaining remission than the 5ASAs - asacol or pentasa.

Definitely stay on ur meds after surgery. I continued Asacol and Imuran afterwards.

Wolfie you should always stay on some type of maintainence med. If not, the microscopic inflammation is still going on and doing its damage and you could wind up possibly having to have another resection.

Nanners, I understand that I should stay on maintenance meds, I was just wondering if I should also ask my GI about going on Imuran as well to help the monster to not come back.

I was just saying you should just take Asacol or Imuran. I have heard the docs dont like you on both at the sametime. I personally would take the lesser of two evils if I could get away with it. JMHO

I know that your right about both drugs. I'm just trying to be pro-active.I just don't want to go through the whole operation again.I'd love to be on nothing but I know better.
