You know, sometimes I can have a shake and it goes down fine, and sometimes it doesn't. Maybe I'm only a little lactose intolerant?
Right now, the problem (or at least suspected problem) is that my stomach seems to hold on to food for too long, and it makes me really nauseous and full feeling. So something like a milkshake makes my stomach feel really heavy. Just now I had a piece of thin crust bbq chicken pizza (CA pizza kitchen) and it feels like I ate the whole thing! I'm learning to have smaller meals more frequently.
Maybe your lactose intolerance depends on how damaged the villi in your intestines are. The villi secrete enzymes you need to break down food, such as lactase. If the villi are damaged, there are less enzymes available. If you take a lactase enzyme before you eat dairy, it might help. I take an all-around enzyme pill before I eat to make up for any enzymes my body isn't producing enough of. I take this one (http://www.giprohealth.com/prozymes.aspx) because it's SCD legal, but there are cheaper ones out there.
Also, your food may be sitting in your stomach too long due to lack of acid to break it down. Sometimes people even think they have over acid stomachs, when actually they're lacking in it. You could try taking a hydrochloric acid pill before you eat, such as the one here: http://www.vitacost.com/NSI-Betaine-HCl-with-Pepsin
