"cleaning out" before surgery

I am scheduled for my 2nd surgery on Wednesday. Actually looking forward to the semi normal life for who knows how long after the surgery. Can't wait to be able to eat again and have some enregy. Dr. said there was no need to "clean out" before the surgery like my last one because it is a small bowel surgery and not a colon surgery. Just curious if anybody else found this odd??

no. after not eating for 12 hours or so most of the waste should be in the colon. also where the most bacteria are. so they can irrigate the upper portions easily and suction it out as they go. in my 14 or so surgeries, i think ive done prep 2 or 3 times.. depends on the area or sometimes the surgeon.

I didn't have to do any prep for my surgery (a terminal ileal resection) except for drinking those horrible Fortisip drinks. Good luck with it arrowslinger.

Well I will be the dissenter here. I have had two resections and I did not prep before either of them. But with both of them I ended up getting infections in my incisions and had to have my incision reopened and then packed with wet/dry packings for about 6 weeks. Not a fun time. If I should have to have another, I will definetly prep beforehand to try avoid the incision infections. JMHO

Thanks for the replies, My first surgery was a lot more in depth and I did prep for that one. I ended up with an open wound from infection on that one. Like you said, not fun. Only having that surgery for refrence I guess I just expected to have to prep, but am not disapointed in the least if I don't have too if you know what I mean.

3 resections here and I had to prep for all of them. They were all at the joint of the small/large bowel and all done by the same surgeon. He has since retired and the last one was 11+ years ago so I'm not sure what the procedure would be today. But I can't imagine that they wouldn't want things cleaned out before.
