Has anyone had surgery without the reoccurence of Chrohn's?

I was just wondering if anyone out there has had a full or partial colectomy, and not had any reoccurence of Chrohn's disease.

I had a resection in Sept. 07 and can honestly say I only had a month where I felt Crohns free. I had a ct scan last month and the Crohns has grown back right next to my surgery scar. So I guess Im a big 'no' on that one.

Not the colon, but I had a resection of 18" of the mid-ileum in early 1978 and was in full and total remission for TWENTY wonderful, glorious years. And when my Crohn's returned in 1998 it was MUCH MILDER and I've been in and out of remission, symptomatic remission and very MILD disease activity since its return in 1998 w/Imuran and Pentasa.

I'm into genealogy and have more extensive family information, both sides, than most and as near as can be determined I am the only member to have bowel problems of any kind.

I was 33 when symptoms began, 36 when I had the resection and 56 when it recurred. 1975 to 1978 were ROUGH: extreme pain, bloating and nausea and no response to the meds I was offered back then. Recover from the surgery was actually EASY!!! Other than being weak for several weeks to two-three months after. (I was extremely malnourished going into surgery - 89 lbs at 5'4" tall). I was off pain meds before leaving the hospital and not needing even a Tylenol once home. (I obviously had a GREAT surgeon at Mayo Clinic in MN).

Hi i had a right hemicolectomy in 93 and went in to remmision till last sept had no meds and under no docs ((I was very lucky)

Crohns raised its ugly head in sept had a fistula  and was told crohns was active but in the small bowel had 2 resections for two strictures in Jan. Bev x smilewinkgrin

I was dx. in 1978 & in & out hospital until 1983 when i had 13 inches distal ileum removed. Have been in remission since then with occasional flare ups requiring meds. but no hospitalization. Problem now is I have a slow blood leak which they can't find. Had full GI work up which showed some active Crohn's (can't swallow GI camera because of stricture at the reminder distal ileum). My blood levels are being kept up with iron pill Repliva & Entocort. This seems to be working for now & i am down to Entocort 3mg daily. :-)

I had my large intestine removed in '02, no reoccurence of crohns and on no medications. I feel great.

Stinky farts, Keep in mind that the majority of people on this site have "active" Crohn's and thats why we come here. People that are in total remission probably don't frequent this forum. If you were completely well would you? lol I was in remission for 14 years and hadn't even heard of Healingwell untill my symptoms returned last year. Long remissions are not uncommon after surgery but every case is different.

Keep in mind, there are no hard and fast rules w/this DD (d*mned disease) but I have read that the fistulizing Crohn's disease is the more aggressive and more likely to keep recurring. Bev certainly is the exception to that! Congratulations, Bev, may you have AT LEAST another 15 years of total remission!!!!

I've also read that the older we are the less severe the disease when it does return. (Maybe yet another advantage to getting older??)

I had surgery in 1990 (ruptured terminal ileum-18" removed) and went about 10 years with only minimal issues. Then I had a few flare ups worth some prednisone, but nothing long term. In about 2003 I had issues with a fistula.

I have heard tale that fistulizing crohns is more aggressive, but happy to say, it has not been that horrid on me. Yes, I think the fistulas will return, but the inflammation internally is not so bad. I'll take this as it is as close to remission as I consider I will be

I had a proctocolectomy (colon and rectum removal) in 2006 and have not had a recurrence of Crohn's. I never had it in my small intestine before surgery, and my GI said that 30% of people only have it in the large intestine, so maybe I'm one of them.

There are a lot of us who post in the Ostomies section of this forum, if you want to ask your question there, too. :-)
