Turmeric indeed has anti-inflammatory benefits, even the powder. The Wikipedia page suggests adding a little black pepper, which helps you absorb the active ingredient, curcumin:

You can purchase curcumin directly and take that as a supplement. Again, black pepper should be taken with it, unless it's already included in capsule form with the curcumin. From Wikipedia:

Co-supplementation with 20 mg of piperine (extracted from black pepper) significantly increased the absorption of curcumin by 2000% in a study funded by a prominent manufacturer of piperine.I personally prefer lingzhi.
