hi everyone.  I have crohn's disease and i was recently hospitalized for about a week for a partial small bowel obstruction.  I had a small bowel ressection in august on 08 and then i had a reversal of the ileostomy in october of 08.  Everything seemed to be going fine until last tuesday i woke up at 5 in the morning with the most exrutiating abdominal pain.  i was passing gas and having bowel movements but i was so neaseated and bloated that i thought i was going to explode.  i went to the er and they admitted me for having a partial small bowel obstruction.  now i'm home and i am going to the bathroom liquidy and loose but yet i am in a lot of pain when having bm.  i called the gi and he gave me bentyl for the pain and abdominal crampingl.  i'm following a low residue diet and i'm still very much in pain.  i have to see the surgeon next week and have a small bowel series as well.  Anybody been on bentyl before and does it work for the pain and cramping?  does anyone have any advice because i'm getting very depressed and i don't like feeling this way.  thanks a lot in advance.  cry   bummed out

I was given Bentyl last year when I was going through similar symptoms as you.  I had a resection on October 1st last year and while hospitalized I was given Bentyl shots tree times a day.

For me, it really helped with cramping and pain.  It just kind of relaxed the muscles in the abdomen.  It did make me sleepy and relaxed so I would be cautious when you take at first to see how you react.

I still occasionaly take it when my cramping is bad and it does help.

I've been on Bentyl for a couple months now, I also had a resection last year in October along with quite a few issues and problems with surgeries afterwards as well. I cant really tell a difference when taking Bentyl, I dont know if its Bentyl or another medication that I started taking that may have changed things and have just been scared to quit with one or the other haha. I've been on Bentyl for quite some time. I'm RXed to take it 4X a day, but I don't take it that often. It slows the bowel contractions down and so it should help the spasms and therefore help with the pain. I get bowel obstructions from adhesions and if I take the Bentyl when I have those it just prolongs the obstructions. So it may be a case of WHAT is causing your obstructions. Slowing down the movement of the bowel may not be what you need, but only your doctor will be able to tell you that, or trial and error. My doctor suggested I try the Bentyl during an episode and instead of it lasting my usual 18 hours or so, it lasted about 30, so no more Bentyl during obstructions for me.
