Should I just ask for the dang surgery?

I've been on Remicade for 3 years now and it has healed my fissure to an amount of pain I can live with but I developed a new milder one that will not go away even though I am at the max dosage.

Although I appreciate any suggestions for healing please know that I have tried absolutely everything (barring botox which seems temporary). Even though my pain is minimal it's bad enough that it changes my day and I really don't want to be dealing with this for 60 more years!!

Only you will know when you can't take it anymore and want to have surgery. It is different for everyone. Just know that just beause you have surgery doesn't mean that the disease will disappear. I had surgery in Sept. or 2006 and had my first ER visit in April of 2007. I still deal with flares but I don't have major obstructions anymore so to me it was worth it. Good luck with your decision.

That's what I'm afraid of: that I'll finally do it and it won't work, or even worse it makes me hurt more or become incontenant. But just the thought of going to the bathroom with no pain really makes me consider it. My GI has always said don't do it and the surgeon's advice was "do it if you want to.". Not so helpful!

Of course your surgeon will say to do it. If I would have listened my surgeon I would have had the surgery 5 years earlier with my first total obstruction and would probably be on number 2 by now. I would listen to my GI and ask him why he doesn't want you to have the surgery or even get a second opinion. My GI very, very strongly suggested that I have the surgery and insisted I did it at Cleveland Clinic. I tried to have it locally and he threw a fit, he actually called Cleveland himself when I was at my appointment. And I am glad I waited a bit and had it done there.

It is a very hard decision, but all in all, I"m glad I had it done. Good luck!!

I'm in a pretty similar situation to you at the mo - honestly I'm asking for surgery if I can get any hint that it may help - have a review this week! for me the pain is interfering with my day to day life too much & the last time i was at the clinic they said it was up to me what i could live with in terms of symptoms - as in if its too much for me & i want to consider options thats what i should do.
