question about Chrons' blood test???

Hi everyone!

I am wondering if anyone had the ASCA or anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies blood test for Chrons??

I have ALL the symptoms of Chrons disease and it also runs in my family. I had this blood test done and it was VERY elevated suggesting Chrons.

However, my SED rate and CRP were NOT elevated which my GI dr said was strange b/c w/ Chrons those things WOULD be up.

My colonoscopy is sch. for Wednesday. So I hope to get the full answer then. Jsut curious in the meantime if anyone can shed some light on this ASCA test.

I never had the ASCA test done, but I know for a fact that some people's CRP does not change dramatically (my doctor told me this and told me I was lucky that she can monitor my inflammation through my CRP). Good luck on your scope, it's really the only way to know for sure unfortunately :(

Crohn's can cause food intolerances because of increased gut permeability. Permeability allows food proteins to pass into the bloodstream where antibodies are generated. Thereafter, eating that food protein will cause inflammation potentially in several areas of your GI system. That can include your throat, stomach and all the way through. For your case, obviously you need to avoid anything made with baker's yeast - the SC of your ASCA test. There can be several foods that you have antibodies for and you may need to try to discover what foods they are.

never had that..nor have i heard of it..but i had a coombs test and an ana antibodie test..cause i have Lupus too

I have to disagree with Valerie on the colonoscopy being the only way to tell. CD can be any where through out the entire digestive system, the colonoscopy can only see the colon and into a small portion of the small intestine. If the disease is active further up, the colonoscopy will not show anything and will yield negative results. Just warning you that you may be in for further testing.

Thanks. I kinda figured that would be the case w/ the colonoscopy. 

My cousin has Chrons and it was diagnosed by the small bowel series xray.

Soooo I guess we'll see. I have had the colonoscopy before and at least I know what to expect.

However, I still don't want to have it done & am so scared the results will yield no answers.

Anyway, I will keep you all posted!
