Well, he let me decide:
start Pentasa and see if it works, then do a scope in a few weeks if it doesn't seem to be helping
get a scope asap and see what we're dealing with

I chose the scope. I'm scheduled for next Thursday. miralax/dulcolax prep

He also drew blood to send to Prometheus labs. Apparently, they've come a long way since the IBD test first came out. He talked about 4 markers, and being able to predict likelihood of future surgery. Interesting stuff! Overall, it was a good visit. I felt listened to and important.

I think you made the right decision in choosing the scope sooner rather than later as Pentasa will take probably 4-6 weeks to do anything if it's going to do anything at all, and it's not a med you take to get inflammation under control anyway. Did he not suggest another option, ie, doing the scope now and starting the Pentasa anyway? I've started taking Pentasa again even though I have yet to get an appointment with a GI so I can get it in my system, because I know I have no side effects from it, and because if it's going to do any good at all, it'll take time.

I'm so glad you had such a good appointment and were able to get a colonoscopy scheduled for so soon. It's always good to hear when people have positive experiences!

I too am glad to hear you chose getting the scope first. Better to see whats going on in there now, and then base your treatment options on the scope results. Its really nice to be listened too isn't it??

He wanted to wait until after the scope to start the drugs so he could see what's going on. He said pentasa is a first-line treatment and works fast. Last time, I took asacol and imuran. He said imuran takes a while to kick in. He also knows I will NOT take steroids under any circumstances unless I'm on my death bed.

And yes, it IS nice to be listened to and taken seriously. Though I had to laugh when he asked if I could be pregnant (I cannot get pregnant, plus I'm on birth control to keep the endometriosis at bay). But it was my fault-I forgot to mention the bc in my list of meds.
