I know this has been brought up tangentially in other threads, but I figured I'd shoot out a more specific question.

I'm having a colonoscopy Thursday and one of the things I can have tomorrow (prep day) is Ensure, so I bought a six-pack. I woke up feeling a little nauseous this morning, so I decided to have one of the Ensure's instead of a real breakfast. However, within minutes of drinking it I had a loose BM and was significantly nauseous for the next three hours.

So my question is: has anyone had adverse stomach reactions to Ensure? I realize it has a fair amount of sugar (22-25 grams I believe), so maybe that is the culprit. Alternatively, it may have just been a bad morning ramping up and I just happened to drink the Ensure at the "perfect" time. I'm now at about 4 hours after drinking it and my stomach still hurts quite a bit (although that is not necessarily abnormal).

I'm just hoping this doesn't make tomorrow even more unpleasant, especially as I have two classes to attend immediately before the real prep (Miralax) begins!

Yeah i cannot drink any of the Ensure type drinks either they do the same to me, constant BMs and cramping and pain.  I found that protein powder mixed with water i could handle i use chocolate flavor with water kinda tastes like watered down choc. milk.  not that good but it helps when I cannot get protein from eating regular foods.

yes, sometimes i also can't stomach the ensure drinks, mainly it is becuase i was on them for a period in my life for like 3 months - kinda sick of them ya know, i fould they are better with some kind of solid food, like toast, rather than drinking them alone. the nausea could be from the antisipation [nerves] from your upcoming exam. i know i get kinda nausious when i go in to see the doc.
my advice: stick to clear fluids, good ol' chicken noodle, or some of those vitaman water drinks they have out there now. better to play it safe than pay dearly later.
if you feel the need to chew - try eating popcicles or ice. that kinda worked for me once.

I don't use Ensure, but does it contain dairy products? If so, you may have some sort of dairy / lactose intolerance, hence the loose bms.

Right now I can eat/drink whatever I want, but when I wasn't feeling well, Ensure was one of the things that made me throw up, guaranteed, every single time I tried to drink it. It also has to be about one of the grossest things to throw up taste wise. :( As far as I remember, certain ones are lactose free, but not all, so maybe one of the ones you got had lactose in it. It says on the label, but if it bothers you, I would suggest not drinking it. Good luck on your scope!

Ensure doesn't contain lactose. It does have milk protein. The bad thing is that the major ingredients are sugar, corn syrup and maltodextrin (corn starch sugar).

When I am in between 'sort of sick' and 'sort of okay' I do get a bad reaction. I think it's all of the sugar and corn syrup...I can't live without it literally sometimes though.

Thankfully, I am not lactose intolerant. In fact, dairy and I are best friends. I'm going to chalk it up to just a bad day, as pretty much everything I've had today (i.e., Ensure, toast, and soup) has not sit too comfortably. Looking on the bright side, all this clearing out today should make tomorrow's prep all the easier (if me a little hungrier).
