Setons hurting and pain when going to the bathroom

Does everyone have pain with their bowel movements?  My setons have been in  since June and they are coming out on Friday.  My doctor still doesn't know if I have a fistula - she just put them in to continue to drain any leftover infection from my abcess in March.  Everything calmed down a little for a while, but lately there is so much pain and irritation in that area.  It really hurts to go to the bathroom - feels like tiny knives.  I want to get these drains out but worry about the abcess coming back.  She said if she finds a fistula, then there will be more surgery - some sort of flap thing which supposedly has a higher success rate than plugs.  I just really wish this would end.  All day long is a focus on the pains in my backside........

I can def relate. I have a seton that makes a ring thru the fistula and comes out thru the rear-end. I have an appt tomorrow for the doc to check it out. I have had mine since June too, and it hurts way more than I think it should. Mine hurts AFTER I go to the bathroom and it feels like a little poker stuck in my rear.
Right now if this doesn't work , I either just suffer with abcesses or get an ostomy bag and take everything out, altho I can STILL get abcesses and fistulas. So that is the nature of the Crohn's perianal disease. How lucky can you get? NOT!!
I eat little pieces of vicodin to stave off pain while I'm at work, where I sit all day long...I sympathize and empathize with you.

Well then Friday will be a good day...a get to steppin seton type of day lol...hey these things do hurt...the flap thing is when they cut you open the entire length of the abscess cavity remove it and then i believe you are stitched up...that way..no more abscess...don't worry about another abscess or at least try not to..you can't go around living with the fear of an abscess in your heart...if you get one..it will be okay and you will get it removed..:)

ps i had extreme pain with my bowel movements..because it caused me to get fissures and spasms...glad to hear i was not the only one..i thought everyone else was just breezing through it..and it was just me..no on is coming even close to me with one of those again

Seton folks, hang in there, I know it is tough, but the Setons saved my life. I have fistulizing crohns, I had two setons put in at the same time. It was threaded through the fistula track, I had them for maybe 4 to 5 months and they automatically fell-off once the fistula healed. When I had them I could not sit, drive, or do focused work. Eventually I had a soft pillow to my chair and sat in a position to my left and ease pressure on the right side and that seemed to help. They gave me codeine, but I never took them, because it knocked the heal out of me.

Good luck, make sure if they do any surgery that does not damage the spinchter muscle, which controls the bowel movements.

Ouch. See I had a fistulotomy, where they open up the whole track, and then let it heal just like that. Kind of a huge wound, and it took FOREVER to fully heal (like a whole year, which I hear is actually more common with crohn's). But I only had pain for the first 3 days. The rest of the time I was fine. Gotta say I think I perfer that route over a seton. Although I know that it's not always possible to have. I remember it being one of my first words out of surgery: Did you have to use a seton? LOL

Anyway I feel for you, I hope you can get some relief soon. Abcesses and fistulas are just the worst!
