ADVICE - Should you choose a surgeon that is with same hospital as the GI doctor?

I am wondering whether, if you need Crohn's surgery (not on an emergency basis) whether it is best to only look at a surgeon in the same hospital as your GI doctor is affiliated with, or whether it is also possible to use a surgeon in a different hospital.  For example, if I conclude that the best surgeon for complicated strictureplasty is at NY-Presbetyrian but my GI is with Mt. Sinai, is it best to seek a surgeon at Mt. Sinai, or somehow try to have them work together?

Personally, I'd go with the best surgeon, regardless of location. My GI wasn't affiliated at my surgeon's hospital, and there was no problem. I don't think my GI does hospital visits anymore anyway.

I'd go w/the best colorectal surgeon I could find. But I'd also want to make sure he was very familiar w/Crohn's disease. I REALLY like my gastro - but I head for Mayo Clinic like a ruptured duck when it comes to surgery!

I agree with the other comments posted---I would also go with the best colorectal surgeon!  I had a small bowel resection in July, and also faced a similar decision---I went with the best colorectal surgeon I could find.  To bring myself some comfort, I asked my GI doc if I could call him from the hospital if I had any questions or concerns etc.  He said yes, but as it turned out I didn't find the need to call him afterall.

My GI dr is just okay and somewhat inattentive, but the colorectal surgeon who was not at the same practice was a gift from God the last time I was sick.  He was so caring and experienced that he made the whole awful experience a little easier.  Go with the best drs you can, wherever they may be.

I would go with the best surgeon.  In my experience the surgeon takes care of you in the hospital and then you see your GI after you are discharged to decide on your maintenence meds.  My surgeon and GI work out of different hospitals, but do correspond after all my visits.  Works for me.
