Well most of the work up they did came back on the high side, which is confusing me. Triglycerides were up to
the 1000 mark. The other very high value was prealbumin, which I know very little about. I know he wanted it
checked as a low count would mean I was malnourished, so it's good in one way, but when I researched it, the
only reasons I could find for a high result, was, the use of anti-inflammatories (which I'm not on anymore, including
pred) and Hodgkins Lymphoma, which has me a little scared because that can be a side effect of Humira.
Have any of you guys heard of this test? Thanks in advance...

did you fast before the test? if instead you just ate, then triglycerides is affected...it would be high
triglycerides: Adult Females Lower level: 80 mg/dL + age; Maximum: 165 mg/dL, or 1.9 mmol/L,
and if you ate could be 20% more. so yea thats higher than 20% more. might try test again without eating.
check your blood pressure, if high then you might have some insulin resistance going on. need to reduce carbs and depending on where you are at increase fat increase excercise

Hi, and thanks for your reply. Yep, I fasted. I've been having this problem since my pancreas was damaged after taking
6mp. They have been as high as 1600, but that was during a acute pancreatitis attack. My, and my doctors concern is that
we can't seem to get them down. I'm taking Tricor, I only weigh 110 lbs, have always kept to a low fat diet. These fats are
probably going to put me back into hospital because my pancreas is not coping too well..
My fasting glucose was also slightly elevated, but again, I think it's due to the pancreatic damage.

Although the triglycerides worry me ( I see an endochrinologist for this) I'm still a little concerned with the Prealbumin. Something
I know very little about....

bit confused on this...

if triglycerides are high that means they are being broken down this mean the pancreas is doing better (as they, the triglycerides ,get rebuilt after digestion).  If your docs dont think your pancreas is quite ready you need another shot of the antibiotics in the IV.

the high prelbumin is glycoprotein so this is mucusy. need to monitor your calcium,, blood result as well ,,because you have 3 issues crohns pancreas and lupus. still leaning to eating more and flushing things out to get kidneys going, and you need another blood test to compare. hope i helped :)

    Sorry to hear about the pancreas damage from the drug-:) That would certainly cause the tgy. to be high. Sounds like your weight is not a problem, so it must be from the damage unless you drink tons of alcohol. The post before this lists a lot of good info. I hope they get this sorted out for you soon.

    Thanks guys. medchrt1, my specialist tells me that if the pancreas is damaged it can actually cause your trigs to raise,
    hence becoming a vicious circle. I'm not on any anti-biotics at present, so I can't have another shot of them. The treatment
    I have for chronic pancreatitis is Viokase, a pancreatic enzyme. ERCP shows lots of scarring of the pancreas and billary sludge
    so the poor thing has to have help to work.
    njmom, I knew about the list of causes, I'm a non drinker and the other things don't apply. I've been told it's probably a poor
    gene pool LOL.

    Dang, I have been searching, but can't find any evidence that a damaged pancreas causes high triglycerides, or any support for a so-called "vicious circle" theory. 

    However, there is plenty of evidence that high triglycerides CAUSE damage to the pancreas, and therefore must be treated ASAP, possibly by meds.  

    Maybe a second opinion is in order, from another doc?

    njmom, it's an interesting subject isn't it. My doc is professor of gastroenterology, and specializes in diseases of the pancreas.
    This is more or less what he told me...
    Pancreatitis and high trig levels are linked in a revolving circle, cause & effect. When the pancreas becomes inflamed or damaged,
    it cannot function properly, and cannot not release the digestive enzymes. This causes a build up of fats, and high triglycerides...

    I think because I now have the chronic type of pancreatitis it is basically inflamed for the most part. That's why I have to take
    digestive enzymes to aid with it's function.

    Having said all of that, it was the dramatic increase of high trigs, while taking 6mp that caused the original severe attacks of
    pancreatitis, that has left me with the damage. I have to say, I was unlucky. This turn of events do not happen to everyone..

    Vicky, I hope you feel better soon and that you get better labs! It sounds like you have a pretty good handle on the situation...my guess is the low prealbumin is probably related more to nutritional issues than anything else.

    njmom, thanks hon. However my prealbumin was very high, not low, which is good in one way because it means I'm not
    malnourished, not so sure why it's so high....

    Sorry about that, I should have read more carefully. Tomorrow my daughter will ask for her own lab results -- feels sometimes like we're all living in a science project...
