Okay I've been living with Crohn's now for 5 years. I have accepted certain things but am questioning my doc lately. In Nov I was given an xray for severe left ab pain and no bowel sounds. They called me 2 days later and said you have ileus, lay off the pain meds. I was like you haven't prescribed pain meds for over 7 months...um hello?

and thats all they did. So in the last 3 weeks, still having that come and go pain, and now vomiting every other day at least one meal. Phenergan, which I hate because of the drowsiness,. is now my best friend again. Would you recommend me changing docs? I don't feel like they even cared about the constant constipation (impaction...UGH!), sometimes I have to use enemas, the pain, and the vomiting.

Ileus can cause horrible things I speak from experience and yes pain meds as well as things like lomotil can cause it. mine was post op that it happened and it occured after 2 different Sx not just 1. I would suggest a second opinion but the anti D stuff can cause that and cause constipation

oh yeah I forgot to update my med list...haven't had to take Lomotil in forever..lol

I think it sounds like you could have some narrowing or a stricture. I think a second opinion with a GI is needed. Good luck!

Get a second opinion! They should be trying to figure out why this is going on, and treating you for it! You shouldn't be just dealing with it.

I was told I had ileus years ago when I landed in the ER with colic pain like cramps and severe like vomiting. The doctors decided to give me a surgery for ileus. I had been vomiting for 10 hours when the vomiting stopped out of the blue, and the pain was gone. They decided to wait and see, and sent me home the day after, I am happy they didn't give me this emergency surgery, because the reason was Crohns (and not ileus) and I had an obstruction, which gives the same symptoms as ileus. So this was my first obstruction, and my first Crohns symptoms ever. This was back in the 80'.
I didn't get the next Crohns symptoms untill 15 years later. Diarrhea, pain, vomiting an obstructions. In 07' they managed to give me a diagnose. I have, as Nanners had a lot of obstructions, and I guess that you may have a narrowing in your intestines leading to vomiting and intense pain. To avoid getting this again, try to go on a liquid diet and don't eat anything else if you feel that something like that is building up. If you get severe pain and vomiting,...contact your doctor immediately. /Bee

Ileus is just another name for an obstruction...just FYI. It just covers all of them..partial or full obstructions.

By the dr saying you have an ileus, it doesn't explain why, which is the real question. Is it caused by inflammation, or have you had surgeries and could it be from scar tissue? If it's inflammation caused by crohn's, it might warrant prednisone to see if that will make it subside. My obstructions are caused mainly by scar tissue, but before they figured that out, they tried steroids for a week or so to see if it would make it go away quicker. In my case, they resolve themself most of the time, by eating low residue or liquid diet. Either way, they should be monitoring you to make sure things aren't getting worse to keep things from getting worse and turning into a perforation of the intestines.
