I would like to have another child I was just wondering is it safe to have a baby with the chrones disease.

Yes! Although some medications can cause harm to the baby, such as imuran, you will need to talk with your dr about treatment during pregnancy. So best case scenario you would want it to be planned. Most 5ASA's are fine to take, and if you're on remicade that is safe to continue as well (cat B for all those)

I've been pregnant twice with this flare. 1st pregnancy was stillborn at 32 weeks (cord accident) and 3 months later I was pregnant with my 2nd, I was watched very closely by my dr's (OB and GI) I was considered high risk, but that was mainly because of my history of stillbirth and gestational diabetes. I was on 20 mg prednisone (dr's didn't want it any higher than that) and Lialda. Will warn you though, if you are on prednisone, it messes with your glucose levels so don't be too surprised if you get GD or multiple UTI's, it caused mine. Although the diet I was on for it wasn't much of a difference from what I am now. Also, if you are on prednisone or have been within a year, you will need to get a 'stress' dose of it in the hospital. Anything that causes major stress to your body, birth, surgery, etc, will require that so your levels don't drop dangerously low.

Most of all, relax!!! pre-natal vitamins are extremely important. Remember that the baby will get all its nutrients for growth before you do so if you're having a hard time eating, take those vitamins which are enough to cover both you.

Yes, you can have a healthy pregnancy even though you have crohn's. You'll need to speak with your OB and make sure that (s)he is aware of your condition. I took all of my medications during my pregnancies and all three of my children are healthy. I took prednisone each time and it NEVER messed with my glucose levels. I never had GD or UTI's either. I haven't heard of anyone having those complications from taking pred while pregnant. So, everyone is different. Maybe you'll be just fine with no problems at all.

There are a lot of questions you need to ask yourself first. Are you in a flare right now? or are you stable? What meds are you on? Can you continue those meds while pregnant? It's a good idea to talk to your GI and OB also. Good luck! Children are a joy!

I have a question, for those of you who were on prednisone while pregnant?  How many mg were you on? And did you take it during the entire pregnancy or later on?

ABSOLUTELY!!! You just need to do a little more planning than other people. Get yourself healthy and stable, and you have very good odds of a healthy happy 9 months. I'm expecting #2 now. I've been in remission for both. That allows me to be treated just like any other normal healthy pregnant woman. I still take meds to make sure I stay that way. Worked with all of my docs to decide the best approach. I did a colonoscopy before each one too, to make sure all is well. I feel wonderful and wouldn't trade this experience for anything in the world.

I was pretty much told to give up my hopes for being a mom... My hormones seriously effect my Crohn's and I lost a few pregnancies because my body got so out of whack and I got so terribly ill. That being said, I am now 6 months pregnant and despite two trips to emerg for re-hydration I am doing superbly :o)
You do need to be aware of the drugs your on... I fortunately had taken myself off Imuran about a year before I got pregnant.

Hi all,
I am wondering where ppl are getting the information that Imuran shouldn't be taken while pregnant?
My specialist has 100% okayed the Imuran, and would prefer I stay on it whilst trying to get pregnant (as opposed to going off the meds).
I have scoured the internet and have found many ppl who have taken Imuran whilst pregnant and I have not heard a single negative thing about it.
Any info about Imuran + pregnancies is appreciated :)

I too thought Imuran was OK during pregnancy.......not pregnant or even thinking of it yet but its something I'm mindful of in the future so always keep an eye on posts like these! I'm on methotrexate and have been for 8 years, obviously this is deffo a big no-no for pregnancy but I always figured I'd be able to do a simple switch to Imuran the other immunosuppressent when the times right, I'm sure I've seen posts here before about it and hopefully those people will be along soon with more info!

hi all
i myself is trying to get pregnant and on meds. some doctors say try not to fall pregnant and advise us before u try and others say go for it. its hard but in my view its really up to god so go for it. im trying but havent fell pregnant yet but hopefully soon. hope everything goes well sweety :)

If I am not mistaken one of our newer Moms has some articles about the safety of Imuran during pregnancy. We have had Mom's on this very forum who have taken meds such as Pred, Pentasa, Imuran/6mp, Remicade and Humira. All had successful pregnancies and healthy babies. I had my 3 girls after I was diagnosed. Good luck!

Oooh, looking forward to hearning from anyone who has been on the Imuran during pregnancy. My doc does seem to think it is 100% safe, but has advised not to breast feed. We are not trying just yet, but plan to in the near future :)

I had two successful pregnancies while on Imuran (125 mg) and Pentasa.  My son is 4 and my daughter is 19 months.  They were/are both healthy, smart, active little people!  My Gastro, OB/GYN and myself all thought it was better to keep my body healthy by staying on the meds and that in turn would keep the babies healthy.  It worked for me and I am so blessed that it did.
