So I have a small bowel follow through tomorrow morning and I am not quit sure what will be going on. Now I have had 2 of these before and each time I was told to not eat or drink after midnight...the next day I drink a few cups of barium they roll me around on a table and take xrays....this goes on until the barium reaches my colon. So now I am with a different doctor and I actually had to do prep for this test...just like a colonoscopy (which I just had my 4th in 2 years this past Tuesday). So all liquid diet today, 4 ducolax, and magnesium citrate which I decided to use Miralax in stead as my eyes swelled up the one time I used magnesium citrate. In any event the instructions say that they may catheterize my rectum in inflate it with air to get a better xray. I am horrified at the thought of this and dreading tomorrow. Prep is bad enough...followed up with barium and someone blowing air up my arse while I am conscious just makes me cringe. Has anyone had this test done in a similar fashion? I am starting to regret changing doctors shakehead

That's definitely not a small bowel follow through they had you prep for....it sounds like they ordered a barium enema

Oooh I am sorry to say that I think Bar77 is right and you are scheduled for a Barium Enema not a SBFT. I have never prepped for a SBFT. Good luck!

So I went for the test and luckily there was NO barium enema involved. For whatever reason they just want you really cleaned out for the test. I also, thankfully, did not have any air blown into my nether regions. Overall the test was fairly similar to the other 2 times I had it done. This place just had much more high tech equipment and wanted me to prep. So now the rest of the day will be spent sprinkling barium dust around the house...or the toilet. Fun!

Whew!!! Glad to hear it wasn't the BE, I HATE that test and refuse anytime they even try to suggest it.

We'll just call you the Barium Dust Fairy now:)

I should tie some jingle bells to my clothes so I make little fairy sounds as I bounce around the house :)

Veebo, i wish i had seen your question earlier. I have had this exact test done quite a few times and it was called a barium swallow and follow through. It was just as you described, the only difference was that i have a J pouch and when they put air in they put it into my pouch which is basically my version of rectum. I didn't find it a problem, the only thing i didn't like was the stuff you had to drink. One time i took the drink and then started the xrays. However, the stuff wasn't going through properly so they made me drink 2 more cups of the 'stuff' it was truly awful, i nearly cried honestly! Anyway, glad the test wasn't too bad. I am going for a scope tomorrow, i am a bit worried because the prep is not the same as before and i have been going for years. Very unsettling isn't it.

Hey Chatter...good luck with your scope tomorrow. Prep is never fun. I just had a scope and upper endo last week and it was a different prep for me than I was used to since I just recently changed doctors. I was used to the Osmoprep pills which I used for the last 3 scopes. This last time I had to do ducolax and miralax with gatorade. Not the worst thing i the world but I can tell you that I never want to smell lemon lime or orange gatorade again. I used orange yesterday for me prep for my small bowel follow through. I hope your prep and procedure go smoothly. Best of luck!

Glad all went well for you and you were not inflated like a party balloon. I had that done one time and felt like the Goodyear blimp. I have always found it disturbing that when you tell a doctor you are having uncontrollable diarrhea the first thing they want to do is give you a laxative to clean you out. Geeeez, If I drink a few glasses of water and dont eat I am as clean as a whistle in no time. What a rip .
