Wound from Fistula Surgery

I had surgery on my fistulas and abscesses in August 9 2010. It's been a little more that two months and one of the wounds is closing but there's a (for lack of a better word) piece of meat still outside of the wound. So it's closing but some "meat" is staying outside of the wound. My doc says it's not healing properly because of Crohn's and went I start Humira(tomorrow) it should begin to close properly. It doesn't really hurt unless I touch it but it itches a lot sometimes.He says  If it doesn't heal there is a small surgery he can do to repair it. It's this normal in people with Crohn's, have any of you had this happen?

Left you a message on Becktoria's humira post, before I saw this! Hope you don't mind me asking where is your fistula is it down below or through tummy? I have 2 fistula's both through the scar on my tummy one that appeared on it own in 08 and the other after surgery in 09 then had a abcess 3 weeks ago through my old stoma scar which the surgeon said was a fistulizing abcess :0( so looks like I have 3 now darn!!! BevX

Hi crohnielass. I saw your message on Becktoria's post and I have the fistulas down below in the perianal area. Ugh, I hate them! My fistulas had come up after I had an abscess drained. So sorry you have more fistulas they're so terrible hopefully the Humira will help us both:)

What sort of surgery did you have done? Did you have a seton inserted, or did they cut the fistula open, or put a plug in, or do something else?

I had the "laying open of the fistula track" it was cut open and I packed it for a few days after the surgery. I had 3 and they did did that for all of them.

Ouch.

I haven't had that sort of surgery, Lovely - I've had setons only - so can't offer much advice there. I hope someone else will be along soon who has had laying open, who can give you some more constructive advice.

I know what you speak of! I have had fistulas on 3 occasions in the past 10 years. I have treated them with Cipro, Flagyl,  Imuran, Remicade and Humira and several fistulotomies (laying open of tract) as well as a couple of setons. Based on my experience, your situation is either good or bad. The bad is that your wound may not be actually healing completely through and through if you know what I mean. I had a similar experience and the surface healed but then it all re-opened later on because the wound closed over instead of healing inside out. If it is good news, then what may happen is that your surgeon may choose to snip or slice the scar tissue that is on the exterior of the wound. I have had something similar to that occur too and a minor procedure was all that was required and healing was permanent - at least for several years. Hopefully the Humira will help heal both wounds. I'm using it for the exact same thing right now and have achieved 80% healing to date after 6 months. Good luck!

I've had the same thing happen - I had a surgery to 'lay open' the peri-anal fistula I had, and it didn't heal until I went on remicade... before the remicade (I was in the process of applying for it), it was barely healing at all, but once I was on the meds, literally, the day after my 1st infusion, it started healing very quickly.

I feel your pain, its very frustrating having these things healing so slowly (or not at all) - I had to have a secondary surgery because the abscess behind the fistula was not draining fast enough through the surgery incision, so I had to have a mushroom catheter put in to drain the excess. I hope you get some speedy healing soon!
