Epidurals for post surgical pain

Has anyone ever had an epidural for post surgical pain after a resection? they are recommending one for me when I have my sigmoid colon resected. I'll still be able to walk around and such but be out of pain, won't have to take so much morphinel

Loved mine, I had them for the last two resection surgeries. You do have to have a catheter in while epidural is in, but you can still walk just fine, just have to carry a little extra!!
I would not have an abdominal surgery again without having an epidural, they are wonderful I think.

The only way to go imo. the normal means of pain meds were not enough for me I just with they would place it while inder sedation instead of waiting post op for me.. I had 4 surgeries and a high tolerance for pain meds so the last Sx I had I told them I wanted it they opted to wait till I was post op to see if I needed it....they should have listened to me...

I still at times needed additional meds in addition to that and I did have the button to push for a couple of days post op. The 1st time I was on it I had troubles with my right side of my body going numb to where I would fall while trying to walk which is probably why they tried to hold off to see if it was really needed after that last Sx I had. That time though the left it in for a shorter duration

Wouldn't have another surgery without one! That first time sitting up and getting up was a complete 180 from my first surgery. No pain, didn't even know I had an incision. They actually pulled my urinary cath before they pulled the cath for the nerve block so I just had another pole to manuver around. And I didn't have to use as much of the pain pump. The pain management doctor kept asking me why I wasn't using it, told her I didn't need it much after the first couple of days.

My opinion -- if it's offered take it.

I feel screwed! Not only did I not get an epidural, I did not get a morphine pump. They just have me a shot every 6 hours or so.
