Well, no wonder I'm finding it hard to get things done today - running a temp again

I went down the street this morning to pick up my new tyre, because they SAID the shop would be open on Saturday morning. Guess what. They were closed.

* shower and dress - yes
* eat healthy lunch - yes
* paperwork - yes. It took much longer than 15 minutes, though.
* 15 minutes on Christmas - yes. Done waaaaaaay more than this, actually.
* planted seedling - yes
* read the newspaper - yes
* tlc for feet and legs - yes

It's quiet here(as in thread) today ?

As for me, got the new oil tank installed yesterday(another job out of the way) Had to pick son up from school at 'hometime'(usually comes home on bus)but because he was on First Aid duties at a bonfire display he had a really quick turnaround. Got him home from school and the other First Aiders were already at our house waiting :( Poor guy had a quick clothing change and out again and reappeared just over 5 hours later(I felt tired for him!) Today had to have him up early(well early for him) so that he could get his flu shot and hair cut!

Well, I went to a fireworks display with my mum this evening. It was bitter cold, which caught us out as it has been unseasonably warm so far. We got a hot drink and managed to resist the burgers and hotdogs. Then we went to where the bonfire would be lit. The bonfire was duly lit, but it took forever to set properly ablaze. It looked really good when it did, but it was annoying to be roped in so far back from it. At the last fireworks display I went to a few years ago, there was a magnificent bonfire and we were allowed to sit as close to it as we could bear. Anyway, it wasn't like that at this place. We did get treated to some fire balloons while the bonfire got going, however. Those made a rather lovely sight in the sky - they got smaller and smaller and looked like red stars before they finally disappeared.

At 7:15pm the fireworks started and they were good. Better than I expected. There's not a lot to say about fireworks other than "ooh" and "aah", but they did have some breathtakingly gorgeous ones. And we did leave feeling the £5 entrance fee was justified in the end. The only drawback was the ridiculously loud music. I said to my mum seriously that she should bring some earplugs next year: I wasn't even joking. And warmer footwear. Much, much warmer. My feet actually felt a bit like walking over red-hot coals walking home: they were that cold.

Glad we went. I was feeling pretty down before and it did cheer me up.

@vixen - No.. I'm bottling it a bit now. Not sure what I'd say or do after I joined up... :/ ... I hope your son enjoyed his bonfire night. 5 hours sounds a long time, though - think my toes would have fallen off by then!

Ivy, tbh I wish official bonfire displays did discourage from people having their own :| I don't think that's the purpose of them, though. Fireworks aren't actually a problem out here, but back in Harrow they were a nightmare. For a month, you would have fireworks most evenings lasting for hours. The pops, bangs, fizzes, crackles and wheeeeeees are fine for a couple of nights, but they get seriously boring after that, because there's no tuning out the sounds. Absolutely hated it by the time we came to leave Harrow. Incidentally, the fireworks weren't only for 5th November. There was also other festivals at around the same time, namely Diwali and Eid.

Bonfire night used to called Guy Fawkes night, but most Britons would barely know who he was nowadays. Guy Fawkes doesn't really enter the picture anymore. For example, it used to be tradition to burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes, but that rarely happens now. Also, increasingly Halloween is supplanting Bonfire night as well.

I've wanted private fireworks banned for years! Got no love for them at all. Fireworks night used to be just one night of the year and one night of the year only. It was never meant to extend to a month, but that's what ended up happening back in London.

That bit is sad... I've nothing against Halloween but it's really an American thing. And the Americans do it a lot better, IMO. We have a perfectly good traditional day in the form of Guy Fawkes night, but much like Christmas it has been divested of nearly all of its meaning.

Oh well! :-/

Ivy-he is a first aider with Red Cross. Initially went last year to do a first aid course but liked it so much decided to become a fully fledged member. It gets him out the house and I certainly believe it can't do any harm on a cv. They certainly get the full training(not just how to apply a plaster(band aid?) It has done his confidence good too and I think that the biggest shock to him was that older people like to laugh and joke and he was amazed at the innuendo(SP) that they came out with. He had joined approx 2 months before Crohns Diagnosis and (fortunately?) there is a somewhat more elderly lady member who has the condition too who was able to give him a pep talk and tell him it was not the end of the world!!
NCoT-stop bottling it :) You don't have to say anything to start off with, find your feet, get to know others and then let it all out :D
You can say it as it is here and I am sure that once you are in a group you would be capable of getting your points across clearly and concisely.
re Halloween/Guy Fawkes etc it appears that most things in the UK appear to become Americanised(nothing against americans) but it just appears that we are like sheep that follow eveything that they do. Look at the way that Proms have now developed for school leavers(it costs an arm and a leg) My children have never been out 'trick or treating' on Halloween. They have had the pumpkins to carve out and halloween sweets at home but I have never felt the inclination to send them 'out begging' for treats. I'm a mean mum!!
