Prednisone finally caught up with me...

I knew that little devil pill would catch up to me some day.  I've been having severe ankle pain in both the left and right for the last month or so.  So bad that I've called off work multiple times.  Went to see my GI to see if it was Crohn's related...told me to go to a foot/ankle doctor.   Verdit: my ankle bones are deteriorating from the long term steriod use. Going for another MRI today in the afternoon...since my health insurance would only approve for one ankle at a time *shakes fist*.  Done working as of today, will be wearing a boot on both legs....I'm a 24 yr old gimp. UGH as if I needed this ontop of everything else Crohn's throws at me.

Wow Mag...that really stinks. Is there any hope for any kind of rejuvination, or is there permanent damage that can't be fixed? I'm so sorry this has happened to you. You need your ankles...and you're too young for this! Heck, anybody's too young for it! I hope you receive some encouraging news. I really do.

So sorry to hear about your ankles. How long term have you been taking on pred, and how much? I've been on/off over the years and recently started again (reluctantly) and am concerned about bone loss. I take Actonel weekly. Did you take something similar and still have the bone deterioration?

From what the dr told me, it's an ongoing lifetime issue.  The boot is going to try to help preserve my ankles.  I really don't know a lot about it all though.  Im still in shock...I thought I would just go in and get a cortisone shot and walk out fixed.

I've been on and off steriods since I was diagnosed in 2002.  However, about a 2 years ago I was on 100mg for over a year, I knew then that eventually I'd pay for it.

I took suppliments for calcium and such.

They had my on an ostoprosis med for awhile. I would wonder if itwould help you.

Aw geez. You are too young to have these issues!! Definitely ask about the osteoperosis meds, my DH takes Actonel for bone loss do to Hyperparathyroidism and it really helps restore his bone density.

Whatever happened with the naturopath? I know you got slammed here when you mentioned it and I hadn't seen you post since about it.

MMMNAVY- I'll have to ask about that when I go for my follow up on the 15th.  I don't know what my options are, I assume he's waiting for this MRI result to set up a game plan of some sort.

Lamb- I'm seeing the Naturopath on Nov 30th, and I'm now more convinced then ever that I should have been going the natural way this whole time.  I'm so angry right now.

I have had this darn disease for over 35 years and can tell you I have only use Pred here or there during all that time (and it hasn't been much), but I have osteopenia, need both knees replaced and have had 2 discs fused in my neck. I was never on more than 40 mg for no longer than 6-8 weeks at a time. My ortho doc says he can't say whether it was from having CD or from genetics. But it does suck that so many of us have bone issues. Gentle hugs!
