Any safe antibiotics??????

So, last week they said my urine culture came back positive for a UTI. The PCP gave me amoxicillin. She said it doesn't upset your stomach. Well, 2 hours after taking it the cramps and diarrhea started. I am 4 weeks post resection and was just starting to feel pretty good as the soreness and belly pain was really going away. Now after the cramps and diarrhea last night, I feel like I had a set back with the pain. Grrrrrrr!!! I am scared to try to take anything else. I am worried that my system is just too fragile right now and any antibiotic is going to stir things up for me. I called the PCP to tell her about this. We'll see what she orders for me next. Usually, the older antibiotics aren't quite as bad. There was one they gave me a few years ago for a UTI that didn't hurt my stomach. Maybe that one will work. I swear, it's always something!!!!!!!

I don't there there are any that are safe for everyone, it depends on the individual. Maybe you could ask if the one you took before that didn't bother you would work well for whatever strain of bacteria showed up in the urine culture?

Ask what practical measures the doc thinks might help and be safe.

I'm thinking cranberry juice here. Lots of it.

Pretty much all antibiotics will have some effect on your stomach if you are flaring. They are a necessary med but are not fun. My doctor has gotten to the point that he will give me most of my antibiotics through injection. I usually end up getting a shot of rocephin each month when I see him to help with the constant infections and foliculitis that I get. The rocephin is a really strong antibiotic and I get a shot for 2 or 3 days in a row. It is not as convinient as have to take a pill but it does save me from have stomach problems for a week or 2.

As posted above, they should have done a culture to see what the bacteria will respond to. At least then you know whatever class of drugs your doctor picks it is the right one to clear up the specific infection instead of just a broad based antibiotic. I have so many antibiotics that I have reactions to, not just stomach/crohn's, so my choices are really limited. Right now, Z packs are the one of choice. They haven't been too hard on my system.
