Asacol. Anyone on it and does it work well for you???

 I was just diagnosed a month ago and they put me on asacol.  It seems to be working and I haven't noticed any side effects.  Just wondering who else is on it and what things they have experienced????

I've been on it since I was dx'd 20 years ago. It works for me and I have never noticed any side effects. If I stop taking it within 4 days I have obvious symptoms so I just stay on it. It's a pretty benign drug considering the other stuff I take (prednisone, humira). I've never had any trouble with asacol at all. Hopefully you will find that it works for you with no trouble too.

Seems to work for me, although I'm having a hard time with the extreme hairloss!

I've noticed a mild improvement symptom wise. I've been on the max dosage since August. It certainly hasn't been a miracle drug, but for something that gives me no side effects while at the same time slightly improving my symptoms I can't say anything bad about it. Though I do sometimes notice it in my stool which is annoying.

It will be great if it helps you! It's the starter drug, often. I was unable to take it - got worse on it. Not sure if it was an adverse reaction or it just didn't do anything for me. But, my aunt has UC and she's been kept pretty much under control with Asacol!

I heard about the hair loss side effect and was concerned about that. How long were you taking it before that started to happen??

i've been taking asacol for more than 15 years- maybe closer to 20- i can't even remember. now i just switched to Asacol HD so i can take fewer pills. i never think it does anything and then about a year ago the doc said lets get you off it...very quickly i noticed symptoms of the crohn's getitng worse so i went right back on...

I am another who has had great success with Asacol. I have been successfully maintained with it for the past 5-6 years. Prior to that I always just used Pred and Pentasa to get my disease under control, except for a brief stint on 6mp.

As for the "hair shedding", yes I do have some, but have added in extra Folic Acid and I have noticed it really has slowed down. Hugs!

When I first started on Asacol in 1992 I noticed hair loss, but I had just given birth, so I figured it was 50-50 if it was hormones or Asacol. My hairdresser recommended Biotin (found in multivitamins). It gradually went away. My Asacol dose is now lower, and I take a multivitamin fairly regularly.

I like lialda better, 2 pills a day instead of 6.
I have not tried the HD version of asacol, I hear good things about it though.

I don't notice side affects from lialda, I dunno if it is doing anything for me, but I take it anyways.
Patient access network foundation pays for lialda, so I keep on using it.

Remember to take folic acid if you use any of these meds.

I usually post on the UC board but I take Asacol and it helped to get me out of my first big flare and stay in remission for a year. After a year, I had another flare up and now it seems like Asacol doesn't help so much. It may help a bit but it's not enough to get me into remission or keep me in remission.

That drug did not work for me at all and I began to take the drug as well when I was first diagnosed, so good luck!! I hope the drug will work for you. :)
