I am wondering if anyone is on oral iron that also have Crohn's. If so, which form is it? (fumarate, sulfate, gluconate, etc....). Does anyone have experience with one having less side effects? Thanks!

I was on Ferrous Sulfate 325mg 3 pills a day. The only side effect was that it made the stool blackish.

My son has had the best results with a combination capsule that includes time release ferrous fumarate, vit. b complex and vit. c. It is often marketed as Stress Formula vitamins.
The down side to this formulation is that the iron dose is relatively low (15 mg/cap) and so you have to take a lot of it if you are really anemic.
When he's needed a high dose of iron we have used a time release formulation of ferrous fumarate called Ferou-sequel. It has 50 mg of elemental iron.
Neither one has given him any GI problems and he has been able to absorb enough to treat his anemia. Can't say if the same would be true for you of course.
Be careful about
dosing - it should be prescribed by your doctor either as a certain amount of elemental iron or as a certain amount of a specific kind of iron.
If you have been told to take a certain amount of elemental iron then you can use that to figure out how much of a particular formulation you should take. Generally the bottle will tell you how much elemental iron is in a dose/pill/capsule though you may have to look carefully to find it.

I tried mult pill forms use to use the slow release (when i suffered even from my CD with C rather than D. I now have D instead so I use regular iron. I found it was causing severe pain the following day so my GI suggested I try to crush it and mix it with something like applesauce to help...it did however had it not I would have been placed on Rx Iron some different form. I also use B12 shots for anemia
