Any notice that Tylenol CAUSES fevers or am I just crazy?

Hello,

I have noticed that when I take Tylenol it seems to actually cause my fevers instead of reducing them.

I was released from the hospital on Dec. 5th (they did lots of tests - I swear they are like vampires, they ruled out drugged induced lupus but did discover I had C. Diff.).

They gave me  a liter bag of IVIG. The next morning after IVIG I felt great. (They then crushed my high by saying it was probably the prednisine that I went back on a few days before).

A few days after being released my fevers went away  (could it be the antibiotic, or the IVIG, Prednisone 10 mg - who knows?). But there was a stretch of over 7 days that I had no fevers.

Today opening a toy for my son I cut my finger bad enough that I took two tylenols to help with the pain. Currently at 102.6 and know I am in for a sleepless night.

At any rate, am I crazy? I didn't have the fever before I cut myself.

hey steve, lots of folks have fevers and lots don't, it depends, I only had a fever once with cd, when I was super ill my fever was 106, after that i never had a fever with cd and I've had cd for 40 years, until they did surgery, after that never had one, but the time I had the huge fever it was like I hit the point where my body couldn't take it and hense the fever, they operated and my fever went away, but I still had more surgery, I had 3 surgeries within a 6 month period and they removed 8ft of small bowel, first was exploratory to see why I was obstructed, then a few months later they did bowel bypass, (worthless), then I almost died and they had no choice but to go in and remove disease, this was 1971 so you can imagine how little they knew about cd in fact it was called ilitis, crohns wasn't evan crohns back then, they have come along way as far as med's go. surgery can really help get you to remission, you have young children, you want very much to be there for your kids. good luck to you, you will get some great advice here

Wow, I've never heard of tylenol causing fevers before. It probably is just coincidental. I'd be more concerned that Tylenol is not controlling your fever. Could be that you just contracted some virus, causing your fever.

Also, about a year ago I realized that I'd been giving my husband expired tylenol (by about a year), and it only worked partially. I finally realized that and bought him some new tylenol, and it worked like normal.

If I were you, I'd work under the assumption that the fever is not caused by the tylenol, and try to get the fever under control, so you can have a reasonably restful night. I hope you feel better soon.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I think steroids can suppress fevers. So, it maybe that you just didn't notice the fevers, because steroids were suppressing the fever. That's another thing for you to consider.

If you are on prednisone and have a fever of 102 you should be calling your GI, particularly if you have taken Tylenol and you still have that high a fever.

Prednisone can mask serious infections - including a return of the c. diff - and any fever while on prednisone should be investigated promptly.

Your C-diff can definitely cause you to have a fever. It would make sense that since your body is now trying to fight the C-diff that you would have an elevated temp and would not attribute it to the tylenol. If anything, the fever may have been even higher if you had not taken the tylenol.

Thanks all. I tested negative for C. Diff. on Thursday but my doctor wants me on the antibiotic for another week to be on the safe side.


Pretty much I guess I will chalk the fevers up to the Crohn's disease. I hope the surgery will make that part go away. Basically I've spent the last two years of my life on my couch. Checked-out of life. Checked-out of being a husband or a father. I'm sure you all understand what I mean. None of the drug therapies have worked (see my signature) so there really is very little left in terms of my options.

If you suffer with alot of Fistula's etc I think a med such as Remicade might do the trick. Remicade has been very successful for those with fistulizing Crohns.

When is your surgery? You briefly touched on surgery, but I didn't see when it was scheduled for. Good luck and if you are having surgery, I hope you get a long long remission from it. Be sure to get back on some maintenance med afterwards so you don't have to have a repeat. Hugs!

We haven't set a date for the surgery. My doctor wants to do one more dose of IVIG, then a Flex Sigmoid. If the disease still looks rampant then we need to discuss surgery.

Not sure what kind of surgery. All my disease is centralized in my large bowel only. I think they would remove my entire large bowel. My doctor says because of my Fistula I am not a good canidate for the J-pouch surgery they do for people with UC. Basically I may have a colostomy bag the rest of my life. Having a bag and hopefully getting my life back - I will take the bag.

rpsteve~if surgery will mean an ostomy...check out the ostomy forum. Many of us have Crohn's and live happy and healthy lives with our Ileostomies :-) and some do have Colostomies, too!!

Sorry to hear about the quality of life...I know how sad that can be. In fact, I mentioned that to my hubby as I was cross country skiing through the Metro Parks today...two and a half years ago I would not have been doing that!

I hope you find relief soon.

my sister has a bag ostomy bag for 20 years and she is on no med's, some leakage at her ostomy site, which is very nerve wracking, she has no colon, mine is in small bowel so no shot for me, only med's and probably more surgery down the road, now tho rem and vicodin help, I still have post op comp's, enough to be on permanent dis. ssdi. I'm 60 and scared, more anxiety than I ever thought I would have. but back to you and your thoughts, you will do fine with colonostomy
