Flare-up...........what do I do?

Hi Folks:

I've been a Crohn's patient for nearly two years. So far, I've been in remission with 3.6g of Lialda per day. Over the past week, I've had bloody stools. Reached out to my GI, a few days ago, and he asked me to increase dosage to 4.8g of Lialda per day and monitor my progress. So far, the bloody stools haven't letup. Should I be concerned or is this a normal part of flare-up?

This is my first flare and hence I'm not sure what to expect.

Stay on top of it, and make sure your GI knows, even if you think you're making a nuisance of yourself.

Stay in touch with your doctor about your progress. If the Lialda isn't working, he may put you on a short course of steroids to get everything under control.

Lialda is a pretty mild drug, but it may take more than a few days to see any improvement. If the bleeding becomes severe or it continues for more than 2 more weeks (that's when I get concerned, personally), I would make an appointment with your GI and he/she will probably put you on steroids. I hope that it clears itself up quickly and this doesn't turn into a big flare. I know how scary your first flare can be (although mine was pre-diagnosis). Keep your doctor informed and try to get as much rest as you need. Good luck!
