Anyone had issues with cataracts?  I have an eye appt next Tuesday as I think I have one in my right eye.  He has in the past mentioned that I had them developing, but just noticed last week that one eye has very foggy/cloudy vision.  Which seems to have gotten worse recently.

Just wondering if anyone else has had issues with cataracts?

Both my mother and father developed cataracts several years after taking Prednisone at high doses and my father's Dr's told him the cataracts were from the Prednisone although I never looked at the side effects they list. However, I tend to agree with that because my vision has certainly gotten worse after Prednisone. I always refer to it as a terrible wonderful drug.

Cataracts run in my family pretty good, my Mom has them developing in both of her eyes. She's never been on steriods for more then just a couple of days (and I think that was just once). I've read that it's VERY common just as we age anyway, so top that off with our needing pred and it wouldn't surprise me that we have a much higher rate of getting them!

I hate anyone messing with my eyes, so I dread getting those!

Funny, I was just discussing this with my mom who has developed cataracts after many years of being on pred. She's in her 70's so could be age related as well.

After almost a year on prednisone, my husband developed very small cataracts. The eye doctor pretty much said, you do steroids, you're going to get cataracts. But thankfully, from what I've heard, cataract surgery is one of the easy ones. The eye doctor told my husband that when it gets big enough to hinder his eyesight, he could just have them removed.

I guess you'll find out next tuesday. I hope you don't need another surgery at this point Gail. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you - I'll hope it's something easily fixable that doesn't require surgery (no matter how simple it's supposed to be). Keep us posted.

Basck when I was 1st Dx with CD and placed on pred when I was 8 I ended up with 2 in my right eye. They have since shrunk but told me if I go back on those meds to get rechecked etc sadly medicare will not do eye exams unless you have glaucoma in ur family and if so (which I do) they wil cover that test either 1 time every 2 yrs or 1 time a year or if u are a diabetic they do the test for that besides that you are on your own which stinks

Lucky for me I have great eye insurance. Not really worried about it, just realized how bad my vision has gotten and rather quickly.

I wonder if the cortisone shots I get in my knees is adding to this? I am not giving those up as they give me too much relief:) LOL

Good luck, Nanners. I've had one cataract surgery. Hopefully holding off the need in the other eye. "Talk" to those of us who have had the lens inplant done BEFORE agreeing to it when the time comes.

The surgery itself is a piece of cake. Drops in the eye are all that is needed. Unless you're really uptight about it, they can and will give you a sedative if you prefer.

I had cataract surgery a little over a year ago; it was truly a painless experience.  They run in my family, so in my case I doubt there is a prednisone connection.  I've never taken prednisone for extremely long periods, however.  Good luck to you.

Thank you nruth! I have not used huge amounts of Pred during my 35 years with Crohns either. My grandma had them as well as my Mom, so in combination of having CD and my family history, I tend to agree with you. Hugs!
