Pre-employment Physical and Crohn's

I have been offered a clerical government position. I have accepted and now have to pass a physical. The form asks about serious illness and medications. I am nervous that having crohn's and taking humira will disqualify me. I am really pretty healthy otherwise and can pass any physical tests and drug tests. Does anyone know about this?

I believe you have to be up front or you're scewed with that job and the bennies. they can be nice and like you or they can be harsh, and let money get in the fray. I'm sure they would be concerned that you won't call in sick alot, just tell them the med's keep it at bay. I'm on ssdi because of cd and no other reason. No other medical issues. anxiety of course

I'm not in HR, but if you have accepted the job and are physically able to do the job, ie you can lift a 50lb box and that is a requirement, they can't disqualify you because you have a disease. That is discrimination and there is a law against that. Your disease is controlled, so you should be fine. If you had told them you had CD during the interview period and they didn't offer you the job, you might have wondered if that was the reason, but now they would have to state why you are disqualified and if it is because of CD, you would have a law suit against them. Or at least that is my understanding.

If you're officially hired, they cannot fire you due to Crohn's Disease. As long as you can pass the job requirements (ie - lift filing boxes, stand for however long you need to), there's nothing they can do against you.

When I had my physical, I was adamently asking about here the records were kept, what they were for, etc. I was told the physical was only to make sure I was physically able to do the job I was hired to do and check for any problems (like bad shoulders, bad knees) that could turn into disability claims later on. They also told me that the records were only kept by the medical people and no information was passed on to my bosses.

It was good, until I started flaring and explained the situation to my bosses and that'd be in and out with sickness now that I was flaring again and they were like "WHAT?!?!". So yeah, my info definately didn't get passed along.

Thanks for the replies! I have been offered the job and accepted contingent upon the passing of the physical. So, hopefully I will pass. Thanks again!

I am studying my masters in HR--they cannot disqualify you for having Crohn's. If they do--you could sue them.
