Has anyone had a resection over age 65? I am 66 and having problems with stricture and partial obstruction. Doctors are starting to bring up the possibility of a resection if I can't keep the inflammation down. Just out of hospital again. I don't know if I should keep trying to control the bowel or have the resection. Would sure like to hear from anyone who has had it done over age 65,

Well I am not over 65, a little younger at 53. I have had two resections one at 45 and another at 48.
In my case, no meds would help me strictures as they were comprised of scar tissue. Nowadays, they are trying to do them laproscopically. If it goes that way, its somewhat easier than the full
open manner I had.
But if no meds are working for you, and your quality of life is suffering, then I would consider the surgery. I see so many people trying so hard to hold on to their intestines, but they are just suffering and have no quality of life. That is my biggest gauge "How is my quality of life?" If nothing I am doing works, then I will opt for the surgery. I have had good results from mine. Hugs!

I am 62 and had major resection in September 2010.
Its not as much the age, but the condition of your heart and reactions to anesthesia.
Plenty of EKG and blood test to see how strong you are, everything was OK with me.
Had another resection back in 1995 and yet another in 1983. Actually the 2010 I was mentally prepared as to what to do and was the smoothest of all 3. You have more information and also know that it is up to you to persevere through the recovery, sitting upright and walking several times a day.
Good luck !

I'm only 22, but I had repeated obstructions before having surgery. Honestly, I would just go for the resection. Ever since I had mine, I have felt so much better. You are more likely to have serious complications from an obstruction than from the surgery if they are becoming that much of a problem. Like others said, if your heart can handle it and you're OK with anathesia, you should be fine.

hey otd, surgery will bring you remission, I'm 60 and cd for 41 years now, 4 surgeries later, I had remission on 2 of the resections, the other 2 were exploratory. The 2 resections brought remission for 10-15 years ea. one. just do it

can you please elaborate on your symptoms- partial blockage and stricture...i think i have a partial blockage- it hurts like hell when i poop- seems like i'm trying to fit the proverbial square peg through a round hole...also bleeding...prior scopes etc showed narrowing but nothing severe...IT"S SEVERE! i can't take the pain anymore. my doc briefly made a comment about
surgery last time i saw hima dn i said no way...now if it will make the pain stop i'm game...scared to death about
the procedure, outcome etc...sorry it's a bit off topic but i'm thinking if your symptoms are similar it would kind of confirm my thoughts...thanks!

@mtgman
I have a 2 foot section at terminal ilium that has thickened to almost closing. When I am inflamed, I get blockage symptoms such as high fever, chills, nausea and vomiting, and not constant pain, but spastic pain that rolls in about
once a minute and then goes away for a minute. Can't eat regular size meals any more and am on strict low residue diet, but still having these episodes. Prednisone will relieve the blockage symptoms after a day or so so that I re
open up until the next episode.
