? for those who have had recent resections

I have my follow up with my surgeon tomorrow to remove the staples and check everything, so I will get all my answers from him then, but in the mean time I am coming to my real experts. I just don't remember it being like this after my other resections, but I was a lot younger then.

I have NO appetite. I am literally forcing myself to eat a few bites of food at each meal. A few crackers, a couple of bites of scrambled eggs, a bite of fish, mashed potato. I am barely beyond full liquid and just don't care if I ever see food. I haven't really eaten since the original partial blockage started in the beginning of February, so I should be really hungry. I really am not eating anything except water and a Popsicle everyday. As soon as I eat the peristalsis starts and OMG I need to go lie down the pain is so bad. I am also not having regular BM, which is really weird for me. I started out taking some Miralax over the weekend and then moved on to Dulcolax, which has helped.

I remember having some pain when I ate with the other 3 resections, but not a week and a half later, and I was hungry. Does this sound within the range of normal or should I be concerned?

Zanne after my recent kidney surgery I was much the same way. Had absolutely no appetite and while I tried to make myself eat, it just made me feel like crap. I think thats why I ended up back in the hospital as I started getting so weak.

My one thought is that your stomach shrunk from not eating for so long, and maybe its going to take time to build back up to where you were. Hugs and I hope things improve soon. Hugs!

Zanne, I still have pain LRQ when food or gas passes there and as you know I'm about 1.5 weeks ahead of you.
Today is 4 weeks exactly.
For the first two-three weeks, I also had very little appetite, had ALOT of searing pain inside and outside, and nausea.

I took gravel, which helped with the nausea. I forced myself to eat too. You just have to keep forcing yourself to eat something easy to digest--don't overdo it, of course--and stay on top of the pain with your meds. The pain meds did not take my pain away, just diminished it so it was somewhat bearable.

By week three, things started to finally turn around so I could move a little better, had noticeably less pain, but pain after eating has only gotten better in the third and fourth week, even though it is still there and can be quite intense.

My first resection was about 6 years ago and I remember I had pain at the anastamosis for weeks and weeks. I think it's normal and part of the healing. Now, my incision is still tender and scabbed and I can just imagine it's the same in the intestines.

Remember, keep trying to walk a little, rest often, and eat easy to digest foods. I found nice warm showers also helped.

I find this experience can be quite scary at times and I'm hanging in there myself, but after week 2, it just gets noticeably better ever week.

I think everything is sluggish. on all my resections, I came out of them really good, eating within 4 days, bm's the next day after surg.after all these surg's. I had ng tube when I woke up and kept it for 48hr's. on my third one asked to not have one, bad mistake. took along time for me to come around. with the ng tube it sucks all that horrid bile out of your stomach. lap surg's. they don't do that. I'm over due for resection, probably late in this year, but I'm going to ask for ng, I'm experienced with ng and without, I'll take with. I had to go to er and get ng tube anyway, but that's just my body, not everyone is like that, it could be that I'm overly sensitive, already have 9ft of small bowel removed.

zanne, I won't mention ng tube again, but what dunny said is exactly how I felt, not right, un easy feeling, a feeling that something wasn't right. When I did have little tiny noodle like bm's. not normal for me at all. It came to giant head 3 days after i got home. when I went back to er, and they stuck that tube down my throat, I vomited and had huge bile D at the same time. Bile was coming out of anyplace it could, except my eyes. I was good to go in 3 days.

Zanne, I have been having bm almost everday (except once or twice), starting on Day 3. Mostly a lot of D, but cholestyramine helped slow it down.

It's common for the pain meds to cause constipation, but that didn't happen with me. Also, if you're not eating much, then you won't expel much. Try not to worry. I know it's hard because I'm still going through it myself.

Let us know what the surgeon says.

See Zanne thats what happened with me after this kidney surgery. I tried to eat, but just puked everything right back up. They never did figure out what caused the nausea, they were thinking it was the pain meds, but they kept me the second time, until I could start eating again. Wondering if the meds are making you sick too? Hope you get some answers today. Keep us posted on what the doc says. Hugs!

Trust your instincts. You should feel better not in pain, as per your previous resections. Could be an abscess, I hope not something to rule out.

Wow that stinks...I thought the point of surgery was to feel better. I'm sorry that you are going through this and hope that you find an answer quick. Hoping to healing days ahead for you.
