Good evening it says i have to introduce myself ish so i am.  I have had IBD for approximately 13 years.  I discovered it's wrath quickly and it was a complete shock to me for the first time i had it i nearly died.  I went from a size 14 to a size 8 in 2 months, i couldn't eat or drink anything, it went straight through me.  My doctor put me on Asacol which didn't work i begged her to help me, she changed it to Azathiprine and after some months it worked!!! My life went back to normal, i could go out, eat what i wanted, drink what i wanted, sleep at other people's houses, things i would never have considered doing before being 'normal' again.   I have suffered the peril of steroids and being left on them too long, losing my hair, spots etc, i have my hair back it's now down to my waist if a little thinner, i've been a very very lucky girl!   I have been well for years with the odd minor blip.  But for some reason these last 2 weeks, i have been 'going' a bit more often, and have lost weight off the regions i usually do when sick with IBD, the pelvis and my hips and i have no idea why this has suddenly flared up on me.  Usually it is down to stress but i can't think of anything that i'm stressed over.  I must admit that i am quite worried at the moment and am craving foods that i can't stand and eating them such as prawns so i'm obviously lacking in something.  I am a support worker on the community i work with all age ranges and it's a job i totally love, i'm nearing 33 now with a wicked sense of humour and a totally different outlook on life to what i had before...and if it flares up again, i will beat it again.  So that's me! ;)

Hi Hex. Welcome to the forum. My husband has crohn's disease, I'm just his support system. I hang out here a lot and people here have been wonderful - knowledgeable, compassionate, empathetic and supportive. I like your attitude - yes, you will beat it again. Tough times don't last, but tough people do (or something like that). Someone told me that once - I try, but I know I slip sometimes . . . well, a lot actually. . . but I try :-)

If you think you are starting to flare up again, I think it's best to call your doc and consult right away. I think flare ups are far easier to control in the beginning, rather than let it get really bad. Maybe just a short burst of steroids will get you back to normal, or maybe you need to up the dose of AZA.

Hi Hex,

And welcome to Healingwell. Sorry to hear you are flaring again. I think I would have to agree with PV here in that you should try to nip this in the bud quickly. Maybe only a quick burst of Pred will be needed to quiet things back down. Or maybe you need an adjustment made in your AZA. Or possibly adding something like Pentasa into your med mix.

Hope you are able to get in with the doctor soon, and get feeling better soon too. Keep us posted on what the doc says and how you are doing.

hey hex; I'm not convinced that stress is the actual trigger for flare's. Having alot of stress isn't good for sure. I'm 40 yr sufferer of cd. it seems for me injury is big flare starter, or i had 6 tooth partial in my front teeth that started me on this current flare. I broke my jaw twice one year, and the first time they put plates in and it never effected me. The second time I broke it, they wired my mouth shut, took the plates out. I had to have resection within 4 weeks after getting my mouth slammed shut(wired). I almost think cd is from our personallity, If you tend to worry, internally that is. That goes for kids as well, I worried as a kid, and I internalized it. maybe stress is considered a form of worry, or vice verse.JMHO

I also another one not convinced that stress is always a trigger for CD to flare. In all mt stressful times, my son stillborn, my mum dying suddenly, my husband being sacked from work for no reason, suddenly being dx with a blood clotting disorder that they cannot treat that will kill me earlier than I should expect...... you get the idea oh and having a very stressful job with demanding targets. Not on one of these occasions has the CD flared up, it has been good as gold. Have gone nearly 7 years without probs and stopped all drugs for a year and then it flared up last summer. Think it goes to show that in my case, even when my GI had said I had an aggressive form of CD that I need the drugs to keep it all stable.

Things are starting to settle and back to work 5th April fingers crossed.

Welcome to Healingwell! I don't think that stress will cause a flair but I think it can certainly aggravate the situation. You definitely should call your doctor before it gets out of control. Best of luck getting everything under control.

Hi there thank you for all your replies you have all certainly been through some nasty stuff!!! My IBD has settled i have found out that i have a virus phew!!!! There are some nasty bugs going round at the moment and thankfully that is what my blip was all about! My heart goes out to all of you, i think the only thing that has really kept me going all this time is the fact that there are people out there that are worse off than me and seeing how strong they are carries me forward :)
