Crohn's, Humira, then developing Psoriasis!

I was diagnosed with crohn's in 2007. I am 21 years old now. I had a severe allergic reaction to Remicade so I have been on Humira for 4 years. Right now I am doing 80 mg one week and 40mg the next consistently. It is now March of 2011 and in September 2010 I started to notice dry spots developing on my feet and palms. It has now spread all over my feet and legs and my head is starting to itch and I have noticed hair falling out. I have developed Pustular Psoriasis. I am going to try and change my medicine or stop humira so my skin will go back to normal. Does anybody else have this issue with Humira and have you heard of a medcine called Actemra? If so, do you think it is useful for crohn's and doesn't contribute to psoriasis?

Yes, some people do develop psoriasis on Humira. I think it may go away when you stop the Humira. Sorry, I've never heard of Actemra being used for CD. In fact there is apparently a small risk of bowel perforation from Actemra.

Thank you for the heads up about Actemra. Yeah I want to stop Humira. I have just been taking it all the time for 4 years so I am a little scared. I suppose you could say I have become dependant on it. I think it is physically but def mentally. I just reallllly do not want to be in the hospital again. I just want to find something that will keep me well and in normal condition. This disease and psoriasis is stopping me from having fun with all the other people my age, disabling me at my part time job, making it hard for me to play music and make music, and stopping me from becoming self-sufficent, which is what I desire most.

Also need to find a new G.I. doctor. I need more opinions and I go to a Pediatrics G.I. and should move on to adult now. I live in Chicago, IL. I have the best insurance thanks to my step dad. So any and all of the best names, I NEED.

I see Dr. Harrell at University of Chicago and I love her. She's absolutely amazing. From what I've dealt with the other doctors there, they're all good too. Good luck :).

You would have to be the third or fourth person who has posted about this in the last few months. I'm really sorry this has happened to you - talk about kicking you when you're already down... :-(

aye, aye aye!!!!

Well, this happened to me on Remicade! My DD dr says some people find relief by switching to either Humira or Remicade(opposite of whatever you are currently on) the irony here is that, some types of psoriasis can be treated with these same biologics! NOT the pustular kind though! :(. So that may be an option for you. i have not switched because of such good results on the Remicade. So i see a dermatologist who is in close contact with my DD Dr. She has me on a topical steroid to help with the psoriasis and i have started taking omega 3's and vit D. once i started those supplements, my hair stopped falling out! YAY! and as of now, it is actually growing back! So glad i didnt shave my head like i was tempted too!!!

I'm barely 30, single moma and i KNOW how frustrating this can be!!! it can really get you down. You already have enough to deal with. and with such a gross digestive disease, to be attacked on the OUTSIDE now too! dang! can't a girl catch a break! LOL!!!
Also, adding epsom salt to a warm bath can help relieve the dry skin. And i stopped using soap/shampoo with parabens and other chemicals. Kinda gone organic on the health and beauty side. I see a difference!
AND a lil Sunshine is good also! Dermatologist recommends 10-15 minutes in the sun a day! i live in FLorida and the weather has been FABULOUS! so this works for me!

It happened to me while taking Humira - I developed plaque psoriasis. I stopped the Humira 13 weeks ago and the psoriasis is NOT going away! Initially it went away except for where it was most severe, but now in the last week or two I am having a full flare up of it again. I'm so pissed. Remicade and enbrel (for RA) never did that to me. I was started on fish oil capsules in an effort to help the psoriasis, but they gave me diarrhea and gas soooooo badly that it just wasn't worth it to keep trying. Not sure what I'll do next. My understanding is that the psoriasis doesn't always (usually) go away when you stop the humira. My advice to you is to stop it as soon as you can before the psoriasis spreads. If I had known, I would have stopped it immediately and not allowed it to spread as far as it did.

I'm so SO very sorry you're going throug this. Hope you find something that works to get rid of it.

crohnes patient since 83, 2 resections,i was on remicade and methotrexate,then after a few years my body didn't respond well to the treatment,so my new dr ,( i changed states) placed me on Humira,i believe i saw the psoriasis appear long before the med started to make an impact,after 6 mths,dr changed me to a new drug called Cimzia,i call it a wonder drug,psoriasis is still there but dormant,bm's have decreased immensely,weight has leveled at 219 and my appetite as returned.i am not afraid to venture out with the family.and am starting to feel good about myself.

When I was taking Humira I starting have skin issues, itching, small raised bumps. My NP put me on Visteril and it helped me considerably. It also helps with anxiety. Good luck!

Thank you guys. I really hope the psoriasis will go away after I stop the humira. Pleaseeeeeee don't tell me it won't. I have never had it before this medicine. I want to consider Cimzia, it is just scary. These TNF blocker medicines seem like poison with the way they have affected me. I just think....what is the next one going to do? I'm so busy trying to keep myself alive that I don't really have time to live.

I have been dealing with the same thing for three months now, and am stuck just like you were. I'm a junior in college, 20 years old, and it has disabled me from continuing my part time job and it stops me from going out. I was wondering what you all ended up doing. It started on my hands then my feet and rapidly got worse. I got numerous diagnoses before they said pustular psroasis. I still am just not sure, and I don't think the doctors are either. I have gone to a dermatologist and she keeps giving me different corticosteroids to use, which have tons of sideeffects as well. My hair also started to fall out and it looks terrible, however when I go to the doctor they are like your hair looks fine to me, finally my third time complaining they gave me dermasmooth and oil to put on at night, which sucks too because i have to wear a cap everynight now. It is VERY frustrating, and the worst part is my stomach has been fine. They are telling me my next option is remicade, however I only am on humira because my insurance turned down cimiza and said I had to try humira first. But now idk if I want to take any of this medicine, it seems to help but destroys other things in my
Body and just doesnt seem worth it. I am starting to think about starting the simple carb diet and taking natural supplements, I just don't want to
Go back to where I was. I hate being stuck like this and feeling like nobody gives a darn.

Yes, I was on Humira and stopped after developing Lupus, Psiorasis, Liver Damage, Mirgraines and Latent TB.

WOW, CAN'T SAY IT'S GOOD TO HEAR I'M NOT ALONE WITH THIS PSORIASIS CRAP FROM HUMIRA. I HAVE BEEN ON HUMIRA FOR LESS THAN 2 YEARS AND HAS DONE WONDERS WITH KEEPING CROHNS SYMPTOMS AWAY FOR SURE. I'VE NEVER BEEN IN REMISSION THIS LONG. WEIGHT STAYS ON, WORKING OUT AND FEELING GREAT FOR 2 YEARS NOW UNTIL PSORIASIS ON MY SCALP STARTED DEVELOPING. I'VE BEEN TO DERMATOLOGIST WHERE WE GOT RID OF IT UNTIL IT SIMPLY CAME RIGHT BACK. I USED TO HAVE A NICE HEAD OF HAIR AND NOW LITERALLY SCABS OR SCALES I CALL THEM ON CERTAIN PARTS OF MY HEAD. IT'S HORRIBLE. REMICADE AT FIRST WORKED FOR ME BUT HAD A BAD REACTION AS WELL SO I SWITCHED. GOING TO TRY AND COME OFF THE HUMIRA TO AFTER NEXT COLONOSCOPY BUT I'M SO WORRIED about STARTING FLARE UPS AGAIN. I NOW HAVE A COLOSTOMY BAG WHICH I'M SO USED TO AFTER BEING DOWN AND OUT WITH IT FOR YEARS. WELL, GOOD LUCK TO ALL AND LOOK FORWARD TO CHATTING AGAIN. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR ADVICE.  yeah :-)

I'M 46 BTW AND HAVE BEEN DEALING W/ CROHNS SINCE 2000 I GUESS. STILL MANAGE TO PERFORM ON STAGE AS A SINGER OF MANY YEARS AND MAKE TO MY DAY JOB EVERYDAY THANKS TO HUMIRA BUT THIS PSORIASIS ON MY HEAD HAS TO GO. TIRED OF WEARING A HAT ALL OF THE TIME. MY WONDERFUL 5 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER SAYS, DADY CAN YOU TAKE YOUR HAT OFF? confused LUCKILY I HAVE ENOUGH HAIR SO I CAN DO W/ OUT A HAT DURING DAY JOB. UGHHH

I've had colon issues for 11 yrs now. MaNY blood and iron ifusions. I was put on humira and broke out all over my body with pustular psoriasis it was painful hands and feet were the worst hair fell out too . Stopped the humira. And still having skin issues 2 years later. My dr put me on endicort for my colon problems didn't help my colon but completely cleared my skin yay!!! But had to stop the meds for a while and it's coming back starting on my feet it got so bad before I could barely walk. Has anyone else dealt with this or found any relief?
