Hi ya'll, looks like i may become a transplant from the UC forum. a little history: my son had UC since birth, increasingly severe, didn't respond well to meds, total colectomy and pull through last november. surgery wise = great, however he dedveloped a c-diff infection after all the surgery antibiotics and it just kept coming back. all of the c-diff tests have come back negative since the first few, but whatever he has responds to vancomycin, though it is becoming less effective with each cycle. all of his scopes/biopsies have shown no granules (or any kind of innflamation/irritation in the small intestine), which is what the GI says is difinitive of Crohns. they've been very diligent in searching. he does have other signs of infflamation and things that could be attributed to an IBD or severe prolonged infection. his UC scopes all showed slimy-looking bloody yellow ulcers. his 2 scopes since surgery showed a couple of fuzzy white patches they initially called lesions and identified as the c-diff infection (or possibly some other infection). these looked like wet scabs. after the first few cycles of vanc the infection came back within 4 days. when we add tons of probiotics after vanc "it" takes longer to return. his only symptom right now is lots of liquid poo. he has no pain or urgency and can hold it in with no problems. he does have lots of little leaks throughout the day. when things get really bad his symptoms are the liquid D, fever, lethargy, loss of appetite and the poo has that certain smell to it. the vanc clears up all of those symptoms within a day and half, except it has become less effective on the D, so we're getting a little concerned that it is becoming Vanc-resistant. My problem is that since there is no "clear evidence" that it is a c-diff infection (or anything else common that they have tested for) my son's GI wants to treat him for Crohn's ->
steroids, imuran, remi.... not good things to take if you may have an unidentified infection that may be becoming
drug resistant. Ultimately it is up to me what i choose to give my child.
Some questions for you:
any of you guys have Crohn's without the presence of these granules?
anyone have scopes that showed these white spots i've described, like wet scab?
does crohns ever respond well to antibiotics?
anyone have IBD without the pain and urgency?
any other ideas?
i greatly appreciate any info ya'll can give me.
