How do you deal with mean and unsanitary people?

So I have a bit of a problem and am unsure how to go about it. I started Humira almost 1 year ago and have a weakened immune system, So I get sick pretty easily. Right now I live with my parents since I'm 18 but I will be moving out in a few weeks to college and but when I come back for winter and summer I will still have the same problem. Well let me tell you what the problem is. My dad is extremely unsanitary. He never washes his hands whether he just went to the bathroom or he finished eating and his hands are all greasy. When he sneezes he sneezes with his mouth wide open and doesn't cover his mouth with anything. And the rare times he does cover his mouth it's with his hand and he goes around touching everything. Sometimes you can even see his handprint on the kitchen cabinets of dirt.  I have asked him several times to please make more of an effort to wash his hands and cover his mouth with his elbow or a handkerchief when he sneezes but everytime I tell him something about it he gets mad at me and tells me someone as unhealthy as myself shouldn't be giving him advice. So he continues to go around spreading around germs and dirt meanwhile I get sick practically all the time. I just don't know what I should do.

Wow.

All I can suggest is that you be extremely conscious of what you do with your hands yourself. You might like to adopt some of the measures they suggest to people coming into a bone marrow ward: wash hands, to the elbows, for thirty seconds; never touch your face. Apparently, it's the hands that are a main vector for passing germs into your body.

You might like to carry a small hand-sterilisation gel with you, and use it. A lot.

On the plus side, it sounds as if you've lived with him for seventeen or eighteen years and haven't died yet, so maybe (with luck) all his germs are already in you, and your body already knows how to deal with them.

You might like to talk with your medical team about this, too: they might have other ideas to offer.

Start wearing one of those nose/mouth masks and carry a small bottle of sanitizer in your pocket. He'll get offended, but you'll make your point. "Someone as unhealthy" as you exactly who should be giving him advice. You're his child and instead of taking offense to your corrections he should care that he could be making you sicker.

Along with what everyone else has said. Start making a show of taking lysol or some other disinfectant spray and spraying all over the cabinets/tables/countertops. Maybe you doing all these things will either show him the light or get him in the habit of doing them himself. If that doesn't work, at least you'll have a cleaner environment. I am sorry you're having to deal with this :(.

Oh my!!! I'm just happy for you that you'll be moving out soon!!! And sorry that you'll eventually have to move back to that....if it was me I'd probably spray him from head to toe with Lysol spray LOL but I am a bit of a neat/clean freak...I dunno, if you think you can outrun him, I'd be spraying him with the Lysol...and then run like the dickens!!! I would get a LARGE can of disinfectant and spray every door knob , handle and cabinet surface I could. If dad gets mad, too bad.

Since we had the swine flu outbreak we were issued with antibacterial hand liquid pumps and we still have a load at work. I work in the financial industry dealing with the public all the time so am aware of them bringing in colds/bugs/viruses let alone all the staff and esp now kids are on holidays and come in with their parents, customers that is not staff. I try not to get too paranoid about it, I have a cold at the moment which I have probably caught of a member of staff.

If someone has a noticible cold/flu/virus thing then I will use anti bac and give my hands a quick squirt as we are constantly touching what everyone else is touching, pens, forms, phones etc. At home it is kept clean and tidy without being over the top, well as tidy as it can be with three dogs and a husband - not sure who makes the house more untidy, the dogs or the husband. Thinking it could be husband as the dogs can't possibly believe in the 'pick clothes/newspapers/anything that hubby forgets where it is off the floor' fairy :)
