For those of you that are Hockey fans, you might remember Steve Ludzik. He played for the Chicago Blackhawks for 12yrs. The other day he happened by my neighborhood and asked me for directions. I recognized him right off, and he was gracious enough to stop and talk with me for about
a 1/2 hour.
I told him about my daughter of course, and he told me about his experiences with the disease. He said that he was diagnosed at 17, (1978), but the treatment options were primitive back then. He was on long term Prednisone, and was told he was the worst case his Dr's had ever seen. He now has bone density issues, and is in the 1% with liver disease. He will require a liver transplant within 5 yrs.
He's currently on no medication at all, and has refused to have any surgery. He told me that he takes Aloevera juice, but otherwise eats normally except for avoidance foods.
He has a book out about his Hockey career, and having to deal with Crohn's. He also does speaking engagements at Hospitals or at Crohn's fundraisers. Great guy, and it was a pleasure meeting him.
