Hi, My name is Luke, I'm 23 and I've had crohns for about
5 years now. It all started after high school when I began college. Just about
finished my first year in college and couldn't continue after that. Went back after a year out to finish up and now I do casual work.
Been in hospital a few times but my crohns has been controlled pretty well by the medication, apart from azathiaprine (if that's spelt right) which didn't work. I currently take humira once a fortnight, thiamine, vitamin b strong compound, and calcachew.
I was wondering if anyone new of any foods/supplements that are good for crohns and may have healing properties. I eat most things apart from dairy and try stay away from high fibre foods. My mum done some research and went to a herbal shop and got some wild yam in liquid form which you add to water. I was taking it but didn't really feel any difference. I also take fortisips when I find myself not eating well. Does anyone take those and find them useful?
Look forward to some of your replies. I read a lot on this forum but never have posted anything. It's good to read what some of you have to say and interact with fellow crohnies ;)

Hey Luke
I have found great success with managing Crohn's with diet, that is the good news. The bad news is that no one diet is good for everyone. ANd even if you select a diet it will very likley have to be modified for you.
I had the same question as you and I started out be doing a bunch of research. The time of doing research is really worth it. Changing your diet is a big commitment. I read about
Makers, FodMap, Gap, LowRes, SCD, Live WIthout Bread, Nourashing Traditions, Paleo and more. Each of these diets clam that if you follow their diet you will heal. This would not be so tough on folks like us if they were all similar, but many of them contradict each other 100%. One says if you eat white bread you will be sick for weeks. The next one says eating white bread is healthy. Given you will find contradicting facts/opinions here is my recommendation.
Do real research. This is well worth your time. I started online then I bought the book. Find a diet that makes sense to you. Do the diet 100% and keep a diary to figure out if the diet needs tweaking. Commit to the diet for a finaite period of time and do not stray during that time. After the commitment time look back on your diary and see if you have improved and if the diet is working for you. If not, try the next diet that makes sense to you.
Take all diet recommendations for what they are. That is 1) offered with good intentions and 2) someone ele's experince that may or may not have any relevance to you
I was lucky, the first diet worked for me, but what works for me is not too relevant due to the above comments.
Good luck and I hope you find what works for you

Thanks for your reply and advice.
I will do some intense research on diet control and commit to a specific one. Like I said I've been off dairy for a while now so that means no chocolates, milkshakes and all that good stuff for many years so my willpower is very good. My Dietition put me on a low fibre diet last year that worked pretty well put it was only temporary. I'll find some time this week to sort a more long term programe tho. I'll have to get myself a diary as well.
Once again thanks
Luke

its a total hit or miss with every person. im on a normal diet (no pasta, dairy products (i cheat sometimes) though or any processed crap). and i take probiotics, l-glutamine, aloe vera gel and my vitamins. seems to work fine for me :)
i too am going to try to SCD diet as of Oct 1st (i pretty much follow it but must eliminate all grains and potato. oh well).
good luck! i found dieticians to be useless because they havent studied nutrition based on pathology. if you can, go see a naturopathic doctor because they're trained on just that.
all natural tinctures or capsules take a few months to work. again, a naturopath dr would know exactly what the best thing to take in balance with your medication. rather than spending tons of $$ trying stuff from a store.

Hi and welcome!
I don't know about
wild yam for men or CD. I know women use wild yam when they're having menstruation problems because it helps regulate certain female hormones.
Before you take anything natural look up the positives and negatives or talk to a doctor or pharmacist.
It's a good idea to choose foods that are more natural, highly nutritious and easy-to-digest, especially if you're in a flare.
A few healing or anti-inflammatory foods include: sweet potatoes (boiled or broiled with some olive oil & salt), fish oils, salmon, chamomile tea, green tea, and berries, if you can tolerate them. You can find many more, if you do a google.
Also, probiotics are a must for CDers.

There are many diets you can use, but as Dave said, diet is very individual. What works for me might not work for you. I personally follow a modified low residue diet all the time. I find this diet works best for "me". You are better off trying to figure out what works well for you. Good luck to you!

At my worst, I could only tolerate liquids to low residue--everything else was rather painful but I did heal up...I am currently doing gluten free..I am looking at SCD..If you are having problems with fiber, some diets may be difficult and cause more of a problem..I tried different herbal pills, and I did not notice any difference other than taking a good B suppliment. CD is so individual so what might work for you might not work for someone else. The diet issues can also change with how inflammed you are..What works one time might not work another..

I do SCD. I am still learning but have learned more than I knew when I started 18 months ago. If I can help let me know. Post here or my email is listed.

I really appreciate everyone's feedback, I will take it all on board.
Another quick question: Any views on drinking alcohol?

At my worst, it would burn all the way through with bad diarrhea..I will drink wine on special occasions but it still will give me diarrhea sometimes..I have been told to stick to wines and stay away from anything with malt because it irritates the gut..

Think I'm going to step away from the alcohol completely, even though I don't drink that much anyway. I noticed a few times when I have had a drink my stomach the next day is in a bit of a state.
