Augmentin Antibiotics and Diarrhea

So lucky me, after two weeks couldn't get rid of this bad cold thing. My ears and throat were still hurting, so I finally dragged myself in to urgent care. They put me on 10 days of Augmentin. Which I remember my son having stomach issues with, even with food he would throw up and have diarrhea.

So about 2 days in, I started having just that. Diarrhea. No throwing up, but a little nauseated, even with food. Today is day 5, and I can't take the diarrhea anymore. I'm going to have to go off of this stuff. But I'm afraid it's not just the Antibiotics, what if it's C-Diff being caused by them? No blood, just watery D.

Problem is my husband is changing jobs, and we'll be without insurance for a month. Not sure what to do. Was thinking of going off this antibiotic and get me some probiotics. Just not sure if I just wait and see if going off of it is enough to stop it? Or if it's something I should just see my doctor about...

It could be the dose you are taking might be a bit strong? maybe you should ring your GP and tell him how you're feeling....hope you feel better soon...

I took Augmentin about a year or so ago. It made me so sick I only made it about 5 days. I couldn't handle how sick it made me. Hugs!

PS: You should be taking a probiotic at least 2 hours after your last antibiotic of the day.  The antibiotics not only kill bad bacteria, but also the good.  And the probiotics replace the lost good bacteria.  Hugs!

I don't do well on Augmentin either. I think it might just be one of those antibiotics CD doesn't like!!

Yeah it's pretty darn evil if you ask me! It was better today since I stopped taking it, some D in the morning. But I admit to not eating much during the day. Was trying to let my guts rest. Then tonight I had an accident on my way to the bathroom after dinner. I think I'm going to have to put this antibiotic on my "no" list! I feel bad for my son who took it a lot as a kid with ear infections! Thanks for all the input, eased me to hear others had a hard time on this stuff too!

Can't take Augmentin either. I didn't get c.diff, just horrible D that took me quite awhile to recover from. Ask to switch the antibiotic...not all of them are that bad

Augmentin is a form of penicillin.
If I'm not mistaken it is called omoxicillin (SP?) Please look up this generic version of the drug drug and see if I'm correct.
I was given this drug for a sinus infection once and it made me allergic to penicillin forever. Before this, I could have penicillin shots.

There are so many other antibiotics. Since I've been DX'ed with Crohn's I always ask for Cipro because it works so well on so many things and it doesn't bother me and it doesn't matter what you eat or don't eat right next to it. AND yea, you should always either eat live cultures yogurt or take probiotics to help your intestines grow back the healthy flora. I remember years ago, an old boyfriend of mine had really bad D from antibiotics and all they told him to do at the ER was to eat white rice.. shhheesss

As if my body doesn't do enough wacky things, I now seem to create these monster pimple/abscesses. The current one had gotten up to 2 inches in diameter and it's unfortunately on my pubic bone. When it first started to come up I considered the possiblilty of it being a fistula, but realized that the bone would be in the way. Anyway, none of the 3 Docs I saw wanted to lance it for me so I got stuck on 500mgs of Augmentin. I did not finish the course and swear I will never take it again. My flora is already out of whack thanks to Humira and the antibiotics caused a vaginal yeast infection, thrush and I even grew yeast in my armpit!I've been off it for 3 weeks now and I'm still battling the thrush. Needless to say the abcess is still there although it did come to a head and I got some of it to drain. I'm now on a mission to find someone to lance what's left of it because I have tried everything and I can't get rid of it. This thing needs to meet a scalpel!

We each react differently to any med we try. I've always been OK with the "mycin" group but if I take a Biaxin (Clarithromycin) I am guarranteed to throw it up before it can do any good and that's even on a full stomach

Jen - There are plenty of other meds which your Doc can switch you to. Give him/her a call and get on something else that will take care of the respiratory symptoms but be easier on your gut.
