Hi everyone.  I'm sure this has been posted about before but I can't seem to locate it on this forum.  My mom was speaking to someone of whose son has Crohn's disease. They are going to Pennsylvania to have a consultation with a Dr. Jill Smith of Hershey Hospital.  He might be put on Low dose Naltrexone.  I've never heard of this drug before and I'm interested b/c I have been on every crohn's drug out there and currently am on Remicade (second time).  I've been reading up on it and it sounds promising.  So my question is why hasn't my GI suggested it?  Is it a too good to be true drug?  Anyone here been on it or know someone who has?  Any information would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you :-)

my daughter (young child with UC) is on it. We've been on it in the past for about six weeks and it did not help us. Maybe wasn't long enough though i think it might not have been in the cards for us. Anyway, do some research - type LDN Crohn's into pubmed and you'll find Jill Smith's research. There are many testimonials online but from all accounts this is a safe drug at low doses. It's being used almost "underground" to treat AI disease like IBD, Lupus, MS etc. Sometimes it seems like it's a panacea for everything and so too good to be true. but, it won't hurt you to try. most GIs don't know about it or dismiss it because it's not part of their algorithm "step up" or "step down". If you email jill smith, she will give you more info if you need it. there are a lot of people who have had success with it.

Naltrexone in substantially lower doses (Low Dose Naltrexone) is showing great promise as a treatment for multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, AIDS, rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, CFIDS, lupus, and certain forms of cancer.

Unfortunately, obtaining FDA approval for LDN will not be a straightforward process. Since naltrexone is now a generic drug, no pharmaceutical company currently holds exclusive manufacturing rights. No company is eager to fund an expensive clinical trial for a drug that will make them so little profit.

However, even without governmental approval or corporate support, LDN is gaining significant grass-roots attention among patients and doctors. The exchange of research information over the internet has greatly accelerated the recognition of the off-label use of LDN.

I started using LDN on 1/26 for treatment of UC. You will find lots of references to it on the Ulcerative Colitis Forum.
Another website is www.ldnscience.org.

I am not very familiar with differences between CD and UC.
You will see from my signature that I also started using slippery elm bark, etc.
There is a lot of info re slippery elm on the website cureulcerativecolitis.com about herbal (alternative) protocols.
Don't know if there is any "crossover" and if it would be helpful for you. :-)

I actually have met with Dr. Jill Smith at Hershey Med Center a few times and both my brother and I have actually, we both also have Crohn's. We both have tried LDN. I was very sick at the time so I personally did not notice a significant difference from being on LDN. But there has been a lot of people on this sit who have had success with it.

It is definitely something I will most likely try in the future.

Your doctor most likely hasn't said anything because it is still "new" and there are some GI's that do not support it. Luckily my GI did his fellowship under Dr. Jill Smith so he was understanding about us trying it.

I have a document that Dr. Jill Smith had given my family that describes her studies and findings regarding LDN if you are interested I can e-mail to you.
