I am on Rifaximin, another antibiotic and an antiprotozal. However, the pain increased. The increase is not that one that requires going to the ER but it is severe. I can feel a war inside my colon between good bacteria and bad ones. D became more manageable despite the soiling and cramps. I will take the antiprotozal and antibiotic for a week and then continue Rifaximin alone.
Last time I was put on Rifaximin I couldn't bear it and stopped the med abruptly without asking my GI. When he knew, he was angry with me. This time he told me that I have to take it as it is my last resort. I already failed all immunosuppressants and he decided that it is atypical colitis so I can't be put on biologics (he didn't say that but there are no ulcers - for him and for the insurance company, there should be ulcers to prescribe biologics)
I read many articles about using Rifaximin in inducing remission in Crohn's disease. Also, it was mentioned I have to take probiotics. The last time I took them, I flared up. My GI wants me first to try to tolerate it for 2 weeks and then see him to see whether to continue it or not.
My question is: The battle between good and bad bacteria is severe. How far should I bear it up and for how long? If you have been put on this med before, how was your experience.
