hi there,

quick question for people, i have noticed about three weeks before i came off steroids stiffness and aching in my joints, is this normal and how can it be treated?

I also had swelling in my right leg only over the past 4-5 weeks which has now gone down, but again is this normal?

There are two types of arthritis associated with Crohn's disease. One typically occurs when intestinal disease flares up. The other effects the joints without influence from Crohn's activity. That said, often members here have complained about joint pain when tapering off of prednisone. Is it the prednisone causing the joint pain? Or was the prednisone masking Crohn's arthritis until the prednisone was decreased? I'm not sure. As for what to treat the joint pain with - you can start with Tylenol. Most GIs recommend AGAINST taking any of the NSAIDs as they can cause your CD to worsen. Some members here though do tolerate the NSAIDs so I think you should ask your GP or GI what to use.

Water retention in the extremities is common with long term prednisone use. As you work towards getting off prednisone, the water retention should go down.

My son experienced arthritis while on Immuran. within a week of stopping immuran, the pain went away, and never returned(4 years)
