     Title says it ALL. Its that time again & Nawlins is dead center in a (potential at the moment)hurricane's sights. We will just have to wait & see how the new defenses stand up.

     Time to hunker down, or get out. As a long time resident of the Gulf states, I know the drill very well.

Matthew - I double your sentiments. Hoping the waters stay low and the winds calm down. I am only on here in spells and missed a lot - do you know how sniper is down there?

And I consider Neil Armstrong and all the early astronauts our modern day explorers - feel honored to at least have lived in a time of adventure.

No, And its him I am thinking most about right now. But I also have a good friend ( girl I dated (sort of)in my LSU days) in New Orleans right now. I know there are other members here also, on the Gulf Coast for sure.
I saw a great movie on Apollo 11 on History today, it said it all about the man ( they even replayed Buzz's UFO sighting. I nearly fainted! LOL) and the mission. One of my childhood heros, the other was Costeau. Outer Space & Inner space, I loved living in an age of exploration. Unfortunately, our spirit for this seems to be fading here.. A sad coda for neil's death.

I know Sniper doesn't come here anymore, but I hope he is doing okay.

I think it's sad the desire for exploration has faded... It's not like we're putting the money saved into solving the problems on earth, so we may as well go back into outer space. RIP Neil Armstrong.

Haven't heard from Sniper. My daughter in New Orleans has no power (over 600,000 homes in Louisiana are out) and huge ceiling leaks, but otherwise is OK. Streets are full of National Guard patrols. A 6 PM through 6 AM curfew has just been instituted--and (with sympathies for any Crohnies who've stayed on the Gulf Coast) a no-flush rule. Sections of Plaquemines Parish have flooded up to twenty feet; Biloxi is well and truly underwater; drinking water is contaminated in many areas; and this slow-moving behemoth is still pouring rain and wind across the entire Gulf Coast and far inland. This one is bad, but so far not quite as bad as Katrina. Once Isaac moves on, it will be a very tough time for everybody until power is restored. Especially on the seventh anniversary of Katrina, a cruel twist if there ever was one.

Hang tough, Gulf Coasters! We moved away two years ago (too old and ill to keep running from storms), and we miss you. My heart goes out to all of you today.

I wish we could hear from James, but by now his power would be out anyway. I do not remember exactly where he lives, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the eye of Issac is right above him. NO seems pretty well, so far. Outside the city, it looks surprisingly BAD. You just never know with a hurricane, I remember the devestation Floyd caused, because it stalled & rained over NC. Major flooding...

BTW, I really *HATE* that old saw about solving the World's proplems first. Those problems are not fixed by money, its politics that cause much of the problems. Heck, we could feed the Third World with a fraction of our current military spending. Its getting people to DO IT that is hard.. And I always think that in this exploration, oppurtunities will come up to help Mankind in major but unsuspected ways.

My first thought on our first landing on the moon was:

*groan* even in space mankind insists on leaving his trash and garbage behind. No matter where we go we are intent on just tossing our garbage aside. We've sent so much trash up into space to just keep orbiting around and around its even becoming a risk factor for our current forays into space.

I prefer to concentrate on what we can do to salvage the earth. I know many favor nuclear energy to replace gas, oil, coal, etc. but we still don't even know how to safefy dispose of the low level radio active waste from xrays and medical uses for crying out loud. The idiots in Washington, DC actually want to dump low level radio active waste from several states in Michigan right in the middle of the largest fresh water "basin" in the USA!!!! Gimme a break! Humans are an insult to pigs.

And to further illustrate our stupidity we continue to build golf courses and communities in the middle of the arid deserts and along low lying coastal areas and in flood plains .... I can see and understand and even support trying to save beautiful old New Orleans but to continue to build in similar areas along our coasts .... save me and mine from our own stupidity.

We are NEVER going to "Solve" the problems on Earth, this tired old saw needs to be retired. Its a lame excuse to spend the money on other things. Too bad, money is not going to solve population issues, cure human stupidity, etc. Better to explore & open up new frontiers. ( I too am saddened by the fact that we seem to leave garbage everywhere we go.). There are other, more controversial reasons to go, but since their existence tends to spark heated debates, ridicule, & plain bad feelings its safer to leave them out.

I do agree about building stuff on Flood plains & such. You should see all the beautiful buildings in Pinellas county, Florida. built out on the barrier islands, Which were created by hurricanes. Idiots. Oh well..

It seems this thing has turnned out pretty severe outside the Big Easy. But then when a hurricane hovers over you, it does not need to be all that powerful ( I recal Wilma sitting on Cozumel, Mexico for nearly 3 days!) to inflict huge damage. Jean did something similar in Florida in 2004.
I sure hope James is all right, actually I feel a bit better because it seems that quadrant of the storm hit dry air in that area. Maybe he got spared?

Yeah, I didn't mean to go off subject and was thinking of Sniper even as I ranted about what trashers we tend to be but then didn't want to lump him in w/the rant.

I hope you are right, Matthew, about Sniper being in a "safer" quadrant this time around.

I hope and pray that Isaac's "rain" and moisture hang on long and far enough to reach the drought plagued areas further north along its path.

You don't suppose we could pick up the gulf coast and let the flood waters roll on down (up) to the needy mid western states, do you? Kinda shake the sheets, know what I mean? That would do the whole middle of the country one mighty big favor.

Ugh, I keep thinking of Sniper's tales of snakes and gators ......
