Hi!

I was diagnosed with UC and just had surgery. Having some post surgical complications and it was broughtto my attention that maybe it's CD?  I had one cousin diagnosed with CD on my father's siade but I didn't think cousin counted. Anywa y I was the only on in the family with UC.  I was told about 10% of UCer were misdiagnosed.

Was wonder who here was first diagnosed with UC and what happened to the diagnosis changed to CD? I'm just hoping it's another abcess but wanted to get mentally prepared just in case!  Right now I got pain in the end of my anus. It hurts just to put a finger up there. Can CD be in teh anus as well?  Mine certainly isn't connected to anything.

Hi! I was diagnosed with UC first, although we suspected CD because a few years before I'd needed dilations in my esophagus from strictures due to GERD. I got an abscess which turned into a fistula, which is why they changed the diagnosis (sound familiar?). Just be aware that Crohn's can be ANYWHERE in the digestive tract, from mouth to anus - so what you have definitely could be CD. It could also be hemorrhoids from so many BMs and irritation. There could also be narrowing, inflammation, fissure, stricture, fistula, etc. Some of us also get other problems outside the digestive system, like joint pain, psoriasis, lupus, etc.

My treatment changed, but mostly because of the severity of my condition. The Mesalamine and Imuran I was on wasn't working and then I got pancreatitis from it. I'm now on Remicade infusions. I'm afraid that just removing colon, etc. isn't enough for CD. You'll need a maintenance medication to go along with it.

What complications make them think it's CD instead?

I was first diagnosed with UP, but this year had my diagnosis change to Crohns after some ulcers on my TI were discovered. From my understanding CD can affect you anywhere through your digestive system, so yes, your anus can also be affected.

I was diagnosed with a 'classic' case of UC. Inflammation at the start (end?) of rectum up 25 cm and then absolutley perfect at 25.01 cm. Now ileocolitis. It seems to happen a lot just based on the names I've seen on the UC boards and their migration here.

If I recall correctly weren't you diagnosed with a  'very' mild or mild case two years ago?

I'm sorry you're having these post surgical complications.  If you do end up with a Crohn's diagnosis be comforted by knowing you've got this whole forum behind you to help you when you need it.

Thanks for all the posts!

I got a CT Scan on Monday and folow up with the orginating surgeon the next day. Since my post I had some discharge from my rectum so hopefully it is just an abscess working it's way out.

Yea my UC was mild in the beginning (2010) but then I got hit by lots of tragic life events. I was also very sensitive to the 5 ASA drugs and got stuck on Pred.  The 5 ASA wre starting to affect my pancera so it made no sense to go to Imuran or 6-mp as they have the same effect. It was surgery or Humira or Remicade. If I was so sesnitcve to the low end the high end swoudl only be worst so surgery was my best option.

I'm doing ok otherwise.  I just have a pain in my butt which is what it is....a REAL pain in my butt!

Did you get pancreatitis? (Sorry, my brain can't quite compute right now.) I got pancreatitis really, really bad from Imuran and Mesalamine. It was awful. It kept flaring up, even with just sips of water my lipase would get into the thousands really fast. I was on an NG feeding tube for 3 weeks in August and that didn't even work. It's finally now starting to calm down.

I was first diagnosed with UC, and I first had inflammation in my rectum. However, it was a misdiagnosis. I really have CD. Unfortunately, for me, my CD is kinda everywhere.

It really is unfortunate that it's so hard to tell these two diseases apart sometimes.

Sounds like UC, but, if you want more assurance - there is a test they can give you that give a % of change you have UC or chron's......ask your Dr. I forget name of company (it's like morpheus pharma or something like that).
