Hi, not posted for a while.   My 9 yr old son has just had small procedure done on his anus for a clean out on an op he had done couple years back for anal fistula. luckily there was no fistula this time and we just need to treat the wound with medical manuka honey til it heals from inside out. My worry is the flagyll.... his appetite has decreased and he not really hungry at all and normally his appetite is great. i posted on another forum and someone was talkin about a resistance to other antibiotics because he only on flagyll??   im confused now, can someone advise me.  his consultant only gave him flagyll, for 5 months. along with his regular meds though.  xx

I believe the person had been referring to an increases for the risk of developing antibiotic resistance bacteria. Prolonged exposure to antiboitics, when you need them again, they may no longer be as effective or effective at all.
I get the same way when on antibiotics, lose of appetite and a few other symptoms. His appetite should return once the dose is completed if not before as he gets used to it. Which is possible, antibiotics hit me hard at first, until my body gets used to them a bit. If not, once done, I feel a lot better.
Does your son also take a pro-biotic?

Yes, take some probiotics. There are numerous instances of people contracting C Diff infections after a course of antibiotics. A good probiotic to take while on antibiotics is S. Boulardii. This is a probiotic yeast that is immune to antibiotics so that it can continue to repel bad guys while your both good and bad gut flora are getting decimated by the antibiotics. S. Boulardii is particularly effective against C Diff.

Other good probiotics are Culturelle, VSL#3, and RenewLife Ultimate Flora Critical Care. I have taken probiotics every day since my last flare and I credit them with maintaining my remission.

Most of the probiotics are over-the-counter. The best are refrigerated at health food stores and Whole Foods. VSL#3 is probably the strongest probiotic out there. What matters is not the strength so much but if the strain is compatible. Everyone is different.

VSL#3DS is the only prescription probiotic. It is double-strength VSL#3. The advantage is that it contains almost one trillion colony forming units of bacteria. It is very expensive but another advantage is that because it is prescription your health insurance may pay for part of the cost.

Although flagyl can be very effective, it also makes many of us feel awful when we take it. It also makes me nauseated and gives me a bad taste in my mouth--both of which contribute to a major loss of appetite. What's happening to your son is typical, unfortunately. Blech.

Was pleased last night, he felt hungry and sat down to a plate of steak and veg, Hooray!! then before bed he asked for toast with marmite. will see how today goes, i made sure he had at least a little something for breakfast before he took the flagyl this morning.... oh i hope these 5 months go quick to get off the flagyl. xx

I find that taking it on a full stomach helps. And I also find that the nausea subsides some after a few days on it. May want to ask for a script of zofran is the nausea continues, that helps tons!
