I live in West Suburban Chicago and my Dr. referred me to University of Chicago to Dr. Cohen and his team. He also did this 5years ago to Dr. Hanauer. My Crohn's has been a rollercoaster ride since 2005-2006 up and down, but never really better. My current GI wanted me to go back because he said he was treating me with everything but the kitchen sink and that he was worried I was on a bad downturn. My latest colonoscopy revealed active proctitis and colitis in the sigmoid. I went to U of C last week and after my interview and their review, it seems while parts of my colon have healed, the end part has never healed in 8 years which is why I never feel well and continuously go up and down with my symptoms. I really loved the GI fellow that interviewed me. I never had a doctor ask me if I had any more questions or provide me with their email to please let them know how I was doing. Dr. Cohen was all business but he seemed concerned. They prescribed different rectal meds to try as the others have failed and to continue on humira, pred and imuran. They also told me that my lower colon and rectum are so inflamed that it is hard to pass anything thru, so its either very hard with blood and extreme pain or horrible watery diarrhea, so Dr. Cohen actually thinks my colon may be backed up and to start a fiber supplement.
My question is, should I just make a permanent switch to U of C? Like i said I live in the Chicago burbs so with little traffic its about 35-40min to Hyde Park but in traffic its bad. The upside is that they are on the cutting edge. Downside my current GI has a big group in the West Burbs and serves my community hospital so its easy to do testing and be admitted, especially for friends and family to visit.
Also, by him saying I don't know what to do for you, is he trying to dump me? Back in Jan, he asked if I wanted to switch to his new female GI partner, if I would feel more comfortable as a female working with a female doctor, but I declined because he has followed my case 2006. I'm just not sure what to do. Any advice would be appreciated :)
