I've been majorly constipated for a about 5 days now. Usually I have diarrhea about once a day, so this is not normal for me. The last time I had constipation like this it turned real ugly with severe rectal pain and leakage. I know 5 days ins't a very long time, but I'd like to get things moving (so to speak). I've been taking laxatives for a few days and they don't help much... was thinking a fleet enema might be my next step. My question is: could it be dangerous? What if I have a blockage? Or am I silly to even ask?

You are not silly to ask. It is miserable to be constipated and in pain. You can try a fleet enema or a ducolax suppository. It will help if the stool is lower in your colon. If you have a bowel obstruction, it will feel like severe rhythmic contractions (like labor pains only in your intestine) I've only had a partial bowel obstruction once and it was miserable. I went to the hospital after many hours of severe pain and then I started vomiting. They gave me IV's pain meds and steroids and it passed and I felt much better. I don't know what laxatives you are using but if you need to get aggressive, you can get magnesium citrate and it should work like a colonsocopy prep and clear you out. I occasionally needed enemas for severe constipation when I was a teen and in my young 20's, but I've never done one since my Crohn's diagnosis, so I don't know if it's dangerous. Maybe you should call your GI tomorrow. Sorry you are suffering!!

gumby's right if you had a bowle obstruction you'd know it, you'd be in extreme pain and probably throwing up by now.when i was in the hospital for a bowle obstruction they gave me a bunch of antibiotics, steroids,morphine for the pain, and something else for nausea. they did give me miralax and it seemed to work cus the next day it was like i couldn't stop going. you definately want to drink lots of water to help keep things moving. have you been eating? from my experience you might want to do like a liquide diet for a few days, ask your doctor though. hope you feel better and it clears up soon.

Thanks for your replies.

I've had an obstruction before. I spent 2 months in the hospital waiting for it to pass, was hooked up to TPN and everything. They ended up surgically removing the blockage. Don't want to go there again, just being cautious.

But you're right, I'd be vomiting if it was completely blocked.

I'll try the enema tonight. Thanks and wish me luck!

Thanks for the lesson. Love learning something new. Didn't know obstruction symptom was vomiting. Good to keep in mind.
