Balsalazide Disodium vs. Asacol HD

I've had good luck with Asacol, and now Asacol HD, as a maintenance/preventitive Crohn's medication.  I've been symptom-free for 5 years.  My costs for Asacol HD are very high.  I asked my family doctor if I could try an affordable alternative like balsalazide disodium.  He said that it only works for 12 weeks and to stay on the Asacol.  Should I get a second opinion?  Are there any affordable alternatives to Asacol HD?  Thanks, nice site!

Interesting.

I have been on Asacol and Asacol HD since 2003. Cost has been a huge factor, especially without insurance. My new insurance company (Thanks ACA!!) wanted me to switch to Lialda, but it was still cost-prohibitive. Over 500 bucks for a month, since I have a deductible plan at the moment. For cost considerations, GI prescribed basalazide disodium. I have been on it a week, and so far so good. It was more affordable, and so far is working better than the half dosage of asacol I have been taking for six months.

I know, I know, but money is slim.

Given that there is little or no research showing any of these meds are effective in treating Crohn's, I wouldn't spend much at all on them. Yeah, if the insurance will cover them and it's $20/month or something, sure you can take it and enjoy the placebo effect. But something like $500/month? That's a pretty pricey placebo!
