Hey everyone! Just wanted your opinion to see if I'm over medicated?? Sometimes I really feel like I am. I just got out of the hospital about a week ago to control a flare as an inpatient. I was there for 5 days. Prior to that I was having bad episodes of 15x bloody diarrhea at work with pain, bloating and bad urgency so they convinced me to come in. Docs have me on 35mg prednisone taper, 125mg imuran, 80mg Humira, 40mg protonix, and Cortifoam twice daily at home. They scoped me while I was in the hospital and my inflammation wasn't as bad as it was in December (they only did a flex scope) though they did remove an inflammatory polyp. Right now my inflammation is in my rectum/lower colon. The last time I had a full colonoscopy was August 2013. I am feeling better than I was 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting backed up for 2-3days then having like a 10x diarrhea episode, it starts out formed and then gets softer/looser, which I'm guessing is not normal either? Am i on too many meds? I have a follow up appt in a week and I was going to ask about it... thanks!!!

I don't think you're overmedicated, but I do want to know if you are intolerant to mesalamines. If you are able to tolerate mesalamines, I think that would be a better choice for the rectal med than the cortifoam.

Hopefully you will be able to taper off the pred without too much difficulty. That should be your first goal.

I guess i'm not intolerant but i have trouble retaining liquid enemas. It gives me the urge to go and i can't hold it in. So i guess that is intolerance but i'm not allergic to it or anything. Do they work better than the steroid based ones like cortifoam? Thanks!

Mesalamine enemas are great for long term use. Cortifoam is a steroid and cannot be used long term.

Maybe you should see if you can get a 1 or 2 g enema and try that, and/or use canasa suppositories in addition to the cortifoam.

Okay thanks! I will have to ask at the appt. they did mention Rowasa but i've had issues with it in the past.

I don't think you're over medicated either...I personally have only have gotten relief from using cortifoam and depending on how bad your proctitis is will depend on how long it'll take for any rectal meds to kick in...in my experience of 23 yrs, cortifoam is the only rectal med that gets the job done for me.
