My dear friend was diagnosed with Crohn's and just had illeostomy placed.

My friend is in the hospital again. I think she has been in the hospital more than home in the past year. They have had trouble with pain control after the surgery and now she has been unable to stop vomiting. So their solution is to place a NG tube. I am a retired LPN (Medically Retired) and wish I could find her answers. She has been through hell over the past year and I wish I could help her more than just listening and hoping I can offer some words of encouragement. My health has been in a steady decline from other Autoimmune diseases so I have not been there as much as I wish I could.

She got the illeostomy on Wednesday 4/30/14 and they could not control her post surgical pain. Finally gave her an epidural which has helped her rest. This morning she reports uncontrolled vomiting over the night and this morning. So they want to place a NG Tube. This I don't understand the purpose of. If anyone has any information that they would like to share I would greatly appreciate it. We are in Oklahoma and she is not happy with her care but it is the best she has found so far. Please help.

I had an NG tube with TPN for nine days with my hemicolectomy. My understanding at the time was that this is standard with this kind of surgery in order to let the resection heal before allowing things to go through and possibly cause infection. I know I also had to take grams of antibiotics to kill all the bacteria in the colon prior to the surgery, which made extremely sick. I know an ileostomy is different, but that was my experience. I hope she starts to feel better soon. You're doing your friend a great service by researching Crohn's and talking to actual patients who know and can tell you what it's like.
