Hello folks, I was diagnosed with CD about 10 years back, and I have been on prednisone for almost 4 years.

I have started 6-MP about a month back, and my GI is planning to take me off of pred in a month.

Bone scan showed I have osteoporosis, and my doctor gave a choice between Fosamax, Actonel and Boniva.

Please comment on which drug worked/did not for you.

I am also taking vitamin D +Calcium, and vitamin K2.

Hi Jaya and welcome to HW. I can't comment on the medications for osteoporosis...maybe someone will come along who knows more. Your doc should not have left you on prednisone for four years. I think you should consider going to another GI for a second opinion on your care. I am glad you are weaning off of it....make sure that you wean the Pred very slowly as it may be a challenging taper after such a long time. I hope the 6MP is working for you.

My last session with prednisone caused pre osteoporosis (I was in low yellow reading). Dr prescribed fosomax which I took twice and then read a health canada warning and stopped taking it. 2 years after being off prednisone and bones gradually repaired and I'm totally in green now. I'm 56 years old. Just check all meds thoroughly before deciding.

I've never tried actonel or boniva, but I was on fosamax 15 years ago for pred induced osteoporosis and I had an increase of bone density of 6% in one year which my doc said was a lot. He said most of his patients only had a 1-2% increase. I just started fosamax again a month ago due to osteoporosis again -been on pred very heavily in the last year and a bone density test showed osteoporosis again. So far so good, but I don't have any data to report because it's too soon.
